MURILLOBartolomé Esteban Murillo was born in Seville in 1617. Born into afamily of fourteen children. Lost his fatherat age of nine and lost his mother just sixmonths later. One of her older sisters,Anna, took charge of him and allowed him toattend a relatives shop painter, Juan delCastillo. This Penitent Magdalen is one of the mostimportant works by Murillo to be discoveredin recent years. Murillo signed rather fewof his works during his lifetime and most ofthose that are signed were painted duringthe early stages of his career, before hebecame Seville’s most famous painter.
