Editor's Notes

  1. ASHWG (established in 2005) is a standing workgroup of program managers from the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), the California Department of Education (CDE), and key non-governmental partners who are committed to working more effectively to address the sexual and reproductive health of adolescents in California. The Vision of ASHWG is: To create a coordinated, collaborative, and integrated system among government and non-government organizations to promote and protect the sexual and reproductive health of youth in California. ASHWG Goals: 1)To increase awareness of ways to foster an integrative approach to HIV, STD, and teen pregnancy prevention 2) To strengthen communication and collaboration among HIV, STD, and teen pregnancy prevention programs.
  2. The Core Competencies were developed by a group of Adolescent Health Professionals from throughout the state. They were reviewed by an external review team and a panel of national experts. Prior to their development, there were no competencies for Adolescent health providers. They outline the knowledge skills and attitudes required to provide capable and high quality care to teens. They can be used by Human Resources and management staff for hiring training and evaluating staff who will or are working with adolescents. Overall, the goal is that the competencies will be shared with all adolescent health providers and that the body of knowledge will also become the standard one day.
  3. The competencies are divided into five major domains. A. Professional and Legal Role B. Adolescent Development C. Youth Centered Approach and Youth Culture D. Sexual and Reproductive Health Pregnancy, Sexually Transmitted Infections, and HIV And two sub-domains Cognitive: What a provider should know Operative: What a provider should be able to do SEE HANDOUT for example self test on the professional legal role and the Pregnancy, STI and HIV domains.
  4. The core competencies were finalized and approved in September 2008. The core competencies are downloadable from the adolescent reproductive health website. We encourage you to down load them and share with any partners who also provide services to teens.
  5. Here is a screen shot of the web site page for the Core Competencies. Note that AHC would like you to register for the core competencies so that they can track number of number and types of system users. In June a toolkit should be available on the website for agencies hoping to use the competencies for Human Resources or employment purposes.
