  • I think of sustainability as a way in which brands can show that they share the same agenda as their customers - that's the transparency thing for me. It has a role in the other building blocks too, if pursuit of sustainability involves a commercial sacrifice that's clear to the customer or staff then its powerful in this area. A retailer that decided to pay the living wage right now would be following a sustainability agenda but the effect of the action would be to build trust through sacrifice.

  • Thanks for the ideas Richard. I wonder if acting with integrity and 'doing the right thing' was included in your thoughts under 4. Sacrifice? or if you considered brands acting in a sustainable way as a potential 5th pillar?
