1. 1 Timothy 2:8-10
I want men everywhere to lift up holy
hands in prayer, without anger or disputing.
I also want women to dress modestly, with
decency and propriety, not with braided
hair or gold or pearls or expensive clothes,
but with good deeds, appropriate for
women who profess to worship God.

2. 1 Timothy 2:11-13
A woman should learn in quietness and full
submission. I do not permit a woman to
teach or to have authority over a man; she
must be silent. For Adam was formed first,
then Eve.

3. 1 Timothy 2:14-15
And Adam was not the one deceived; it was
the woman who was deceived and became
a sinner. But women [better translated
‘she’] will be saved through childbearing—if
they continue in faith, love and holiness
with propriety.

4. We are all guilty of
MISHANDLING words
at times
Many scholars have pointed out that both
the OT and NT are highly AFFIRMING of
women, so why is God accused of sexism?
…how does 1 Tim. 2:8-15 walk in HARMONY
with other writings of Paul and the Bible as a
whole?
5. We begin with a BIAS in mind; the
task is to minimize how much that
bias influences interpretation
We can’t appeal to CULTURE, nor
TRADITION, but to SCRIPTURE as the best
interpreter of scripture.
The NT makes a declaration of a priesthood
of ALL believers, not MALE believers
(1 Pet. 2:9)
6. We see women with a
PROMINENT role in the NT
church.
Nowhere do you see a WOMAN named,
‘elder’. But would APOSTLE do?
Those who claim (1 Tim. 2:11-12) are
universally to be practiced, at face value, are
unable to explain the EXCEPTIONS in
Scripture.
7. Comprehensive evidence of
Scripture favors roles as
determined more by GIFTS
than GENDER.
Note: this leads us to recognize that there is
more than the ‘face value’ of 1 Timothy 2:8-
15, which we will explore in depth next week.
