A native southern californian, David Galchutt hasbeen working as an illustrator for nearly 30 years.Though he has done some advertising illustration in hisearly years, the primary focus of his illustratingcareer has been in the childrens industry working forboth toy companies and publishing. In 1993 a childrensbook that he wrote and illustrated, there was magicinside, was published by simon and schuster. nowworking as a designer is the giftware industry, hecontinues to freelance for childrens magazines,primarily highlights for children. This relationship isespecially rewarding as he had a subscription to thatmagazine as a child. His spare time is spent painting,a passion that never seems to burn out.Davids love of designing and painting came at an earlyage. He can site the moment when he decided to becomean artist to a day in kindergarten. He grew up in anartistic environment, his parents met at chouinard artinstitute in the 1950s. his father worked as a graphicdesigner and his mother studied costume design. thesedisciplines influenced him greatly, he has a strong designsense and he loves integrating costume into hisillustrations.
He was awarded the 2010 award for best childrensmagazine illustration of the year (ages 9-11) from theassociation of educational publishers. the illustration"when cats dance" appeared in highlights magazinefor children.David graduated from art center college of design in1981 and he is happy to report that hes been workingas a professional illustrator since that time.He lives in southern California
