Evaluation Question 2: Media studies - Dark paradise
1. How effective is the combination of your main
product and ancillary texts?
Here I will describe the synergy between my
ancillary products and my music video. As a group
we wanted to create a product that would be
marketable as a whole package, I also will discuss
how effective my product is as a whole. Lastly I
will suggest other methods of advertisement that
would suit my product if I was to actually release
this single to consumers on the market.
2. Themes
/Tone
Our overall product as a whole explores the themes of
loss and depression so the tone of the media piece is one
of sadness. We made sure this tone ran throughout each
piece of our work in order to create a consistent and
effective product. We did this by insuring throughout the
photo shoot for the ancillary products and the music
video, the actor was wearing black clothing to create that
dark solemn feel to the project . In the music video our
artist mostly wore black, she also wore black in the photo
shoot for the CD packaging and poster.
3. Themes
/Tone
Our artist also wore dark make up. As
we can see on the poster the artist isn’t
smiling very much and has a sad
expression, this was done on purpose
to tie in with the mood that has been set
by the music video, the only time we see
that artist smiling in the video is in the
flashbacks when she is reminiscing
about when she used to be happy before
the death of her partner.
4. Themes
/Tone
In order to combine all our pieces we made
sure everything was shot in monochrome, the
music video and the pictures for the ancillary
products. Shooting in monochrome can often
be used to shoot slow tempo songs where a
certain tone is trying to be set, in our case it
was the tone of sadness and depression and
bereavement. We felt shooting in black and
white would enhance the narrative . we used
black and white in both the video and
ancillary products linking the products
making them come together as whole. Using
black and white in both provides a running
theme which audience can easily recognise.
5. Lexis/
House style
The language used in our project was
formal, this formal language was used in
the poster and the CD cover on the front
and the back, also the narrative in the
music video was also formal. This is a
convention of our genre, the only type of
genre which doesn’t always include formal
language is hip hop/ rap which often
contains slang. This formal language was
used throughout to provide continuity
6. Lexis/
House style
My ancillary products complement
each other as the same font Felix
tilt has featured throughout the
CD case (front and back),
throughout the inserts and on the
advertisement poster and printed
on the CD disc. This creates a
strong brand identify and would
be effective if we were to actually
release our music product to the
market.
7. Lexis/
House style
For our house style we used the same colouring, black
and white to keep in with the dark depressing type
theme and to go well with our video which is shot in
black and white, using bright colours such as yellow
and pink in our CD and poster wouldn’t have worked
well with our music video and there would have been
no link or consistency. However we did use red to break
up the black and white theme , we felt red was
appropriate as the current themes through out the
ancillary products and the music videos have been love,
depression and death . Red is often used to represent
love and death; we tried to use a darker red so that it
would be a similar colour to blood. Also using a
postmodern outlook, which would argues that the
aesthetic s of a product is more important than the
content, we wanted something that would catch the
audiences eye amongst everything else, making our
products stand out more than if it was just black and
white
8. Lexis/
House style
For example Rihannas album ‘Rated R’ she uses
black and white through out but adds a colour
image to break up the black and white and draw
the image of her to the audience’s attention
Again Michael Jacksons bad album although the
rest of the album isn't black and white the image is
still quite dark and dull but he has coloured the
font for the name of the album in red
9. Lexis/
House style
Again with the use of the same font and in
the same colour we are starting to build
up a brand that works well and has an
easily recognisable link to one and other.
Similar to the artist Paloma faith, all the
way through her career she has used the
same font on all her album covers, single
cover and advertisement posters.
10. Imagery
Firstly the imagery is effective in making the
products work together for example the
house style of the product is mainly black
and white. This has been reinforced with the
imagery of the video where that artist only
wears black and white, the video is also shot
in black and white (monochrome). When
editing the picture for the poster, we added a
very subtle shadowing effect, half of the girls
face is dark and half of it is light, the light
side reflects the happy times she had when
her boyfriend was alive and slowly her face
becomes more shadowed and darker. This
represents the transition of emotions of our
artist throughout the video, again providing
a link between the video and the ancillary
products.
11. Imagery
To quote our treatment “Our groups main idea is to
create a mysterious performance based black and
white music video”. However we needed to also
ensure our print products had the same mysterious
feel to create intertextuality. I feel like we have
achieved this, our video consisted of a girl who’s
boyfriend dies however we don’t know, how? Why?
Or where? We see our artist take some pills and then
she wakes up and she is with her boyfriend. We
don’t know if she is dreaming? Or if she is dead and
has gone to meet him on the other side? So in order
to tie in our ancillary products to have this same
mysterious theme, we took our photo shoot very
seriously and thought carefully as to how we can tie
in this theme. As you can see from the front of our
CD we have used an image where the artists face
cannot be seen, as her hair is covering her face, by
not being able to see the artists face and connect
with her through the notion of looking, it leaves her
physical appearance and the emotions she is, all a
mystery. Providing continuity between the
products.
12. How do my ancillary product
act as an effective
promotional artefact? Do
they advertise effectively?
The purpose of a poster is to promote the release
of the CD date in order for consumers to buy it. We
have tried to make our poster work as an effective
promotional artefact by using big fonts for key
information on the poster. For example the name of
the single, the artist name and the release date to
let the customers know when they are able to go
out and buy it. The two key purposes of the poster
is one to make customers aware of the single and
secondly to let them know when they‘ll be able to
get it. So our group made sure that those key
purposes were fulfilled first, we made sure the
release date stood out my by putting it in red
writing against a black and white background.
We also made sure we used an effective image, the
image we used features our artist looking straight
at the camera, engaging with the audience.
13. Other methods of
promoting my product
that fall in line with the
theme of my media
piece?
If I was to promote my media piece to actually be sold to
consumers, in order to still have that continuity I would
promote my single on indie radio station like Radio panic
and urban rival who specialise in indie pop and alternative.
However I would also promote it on radio stations like
capital fm and kiss 100 who play a range of genres and are
more likely to reach mass markets.
I would organise for advertisement posters to be
concentrated in areas such as brick lane where indie music
is very popular amongst the clientele who like to shop
there.
In terms of digital promotion I would try and get my single
advertise on Vevo on the side of other music videos, this is
very effective as it many people watch their video through
Vevo so many people are likely to see it.
