Treatment and control of asthma attacks

  1. 1. Treatment and control of asthma attacksAuthor : Adelisa M. NeumarkAsthma is a long-term respiratory disease that cannot be cured completely, but canbe managed and controlled with a proper treatment. It causes inflammation of thebronchial tubes resulting in airways constricting and making breathing moredifficult. The narrowing of the airways can be either completely or at least partiallyreversible with the help of treatments. When an asthmatic patient comes intocontact with irritants such as pollen, smoke, chemicals, animal dander or strongperfume fragrance, a reaction occurs on the bronchial muscles in the lungs due towhich asthma attack happens. The problem gets more amplified when airwaysbecome more inflamed due to mucous production creating blockage. When youstart suitable treatment for asthma, you may notice positive changes such as: • Decrease in the frequency of troublesome symptoms such as coughing and shortness of breath • Minimal dependency on your quick-relief medicines • The lungs function better than before • Able to continue with daily activities and sleep with minimum disruption • Decrease in the incidence of asthma attacks that could lead to emergency room visits .
  2. 2. You can play an active role in managing your asthma or your child’s asthma. Theprimary steps involve communicating with doctor to look after other disorders thatcan interfere with asthma management. Moreover, you should try to avoid thingsthat can aggravate your asthma i.e. asthma triggers. Physical exercise can alsoinduce an asthma attack, but you should not avoid physical activity completely as itis an important step to a healthy lifestyle. You need to discuss with doctor thevarious medications and exercises which can help you to stay active. The mostimportant step is to create and follow an asthma action plan as it helps you torecognise your asthma allergens and handle your worst and most bothersomesymptoms. It also guides you to take your medicines properly and know when toseek emergency care when required.Clenil Modulite, a prescription preventative inhaler , helps asthmatic patients tomoderate the probability of getting asthma attacks. The active ingredient, beclometasone dipropionate, is a steroid with anti-inflammatory benefits helping toreduce the swelling of the air passages to alleviate breathing problems. Thistreatment is prescribed in different strengths and daily which varies from two to 16puffs a day depending on the severity of your condition. This treatment can be usedas preventive inhaler and also as a reliever treatment by most of the asthmapatients safely. Patients who are asked to avoid alcohol for medical reasons shouldnot use Clenil as it contains ethanol. The doctor will ensure first that you are notallergic to any of its other ingredients before prescribing it. If you have any otherhealth complications or are taking other medications you should mention thisduring your consultation to avoid any kind of serious side effects of the treatment.
  3. 3. Just like any other medication, Clenil Modulite may cause some side effects thatcan vary from mild to severe. The common side effects include a sore throat, decrease in bone mineral density, allergic reactions, trouble in sleeping and anxietyin children. In cases where the dose is higher than 400mcg, some people are likelyto develop thrush of the throat or mouth. The thrush can be treated easily with thehelp of anti-fungal medication.
