External Trade Bulletin - February 2014

  1. 1. Statistical Institute of Belize .............................................................................. Belize External Trade Bulletin February 2014 1 Belize External TradeStatistical Institute of Belize 1902 Constitution Drive Belmopan City, Belize C.A. Phone: 501.822.2207 / 2352 Fax: 502.822.3206 Email: info@mail.sib.org.bz Web: www.sib.org.bz 1 IMPORTS In February 2014, Belize imported goods valuing $141.2 million, a $7.5 million or 5.6 percent rise over February 2013. Of the 12 main categories of goods, 3 showed spending increases: Machinery and Transport Equipment, Other Manufactured Goods and Chemical Products. The US remained the single largest source of imports, providing almost $40 million worth of goods during the month. Curaçao and Mexico were the second and third largest sources, with $19 million and $16 million, respectively. The largest purchases from Mexico were CFZ imports, animal feed, building cement, and construction steel while fuel dominated imports from Curaçao. Spending on imports has totalled $279.2 million for the first two months of 2014. This represents an increase of $10.7 million or 3.9 percent more than the same period last year. 2. 2. Statistical Institute of Belize .............................................................................. Belize External Trade Bulletin February 2014 2 DOMESTIC EXPORTS Belize export receipts for February 2014 stood at $49.5 million. This represents a decrease of approximately $12 million or 20 percent over the same month last year. There were decreased earnings from all major exports except marine products. The largest fall in earnings occurred in the export of sugar, which fell by roughly one-half to $7.7 million. This was due to poor weather conditions and the delayed opening of the sugar factory. Even with these setbacks, the Belize Sugar Industries Limited is still optimistic for a very good production year. Despite an increase in world prices, Belize exported slightly less crude oil in the month, resulting in a $2 million reduction in revenues. Similarly, grapefruit concentrate sales were down mainly because of the product being stored to be blended later in the year. Farm shrimp continues to perform well, generating an additional $3.9 million in receipts and increasing the share of exports to Mexico.
