How does this relate to new teachers? <ul><ul><li>According to the 2009 U.S. Census for Texas: </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>47.4% of Texans are White </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>36.5 % of Texans are Hispanic </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>11.9 % of Texans are African American </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>5.7 % of Texans are Native American, Asian, or of two or more races </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>16.3% of Texans are below the national poverty level (this is 25% more than the national average) </li></ul></ul></ul>

  6. 6. What does this mean to our students? <ul><ul><li>As White teachers we need to find ways to connect culturally with our students. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>We can only be successful if we use culturally relevant teaching practices. </li></ul></ul>

What are culturally relevant teaching practices and how can they be used in the classroom? <ul><ul><li>Teachers can modify the texts read in class to better reflect the cultures of their students </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Educators can select material and books that show students of color and women in a positive light </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Students and the teacher can work together on a project that highlights how each individual’s native culture celebrates holidays, comparing and contrasting the similarities and differences between each others experiences. </li></ul></ul>

Who is Dr. Ruby Payne? <ul><ul><li>Dr. Payne has her doctorate in educational leadership and policy studies from Loyola University in Illinois, her M.A. in English literature from Western Michigan University, and her B.A. from Goshen College in Indiana. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Dr. Payne has been a school teacher, principal, administrator, and best selling author. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Creator of Aha!Process publishing, Dr. Payne publishes all of her own books and lectures. </li></ul></ul>

What are her main points? <ul><ul><li>Dr. Payne focuses on the differences between the cultures of poverty and wealth. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Dr. Payne discusses the “ Hidden Rules ” of economic cultures. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Her book, A Framework for Understanding Poverty, offers little to no examples of how to counteract the learning implications of poverty, or how to create successful students who live outside of the mainstream culture. </li></ul></ul>

Implications for educators and students <ul><ul><li>Teachers have to work incredibly hard to teach students from lower economic classes the hidden rules to be successful </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Students in districts that follow this ideology tend to be compartmentalized and treated as stereotypes, rather than individuals </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Individual culture is deemed as less worthy than the dominant culture </li></ul></ul>

Who are Dr. Geneva Gay and Dr. Sonia Nieto? <ul><li>Dr. Geneva Gay </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Dr. Gay is a professor of education at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>She has been presented with the 2004 W.E.B. Dubois Distinguished Lecturer Award, and the 2006 Mary Anne Raywid Award for Distinguished Scholarship in the Field of Education </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Dr. Gay has written and published over 85 books, chapters, and articles on Multicultural Education. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Dr. Sonia Nieto </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Dr. Nieto is professor emerita of Language, Literacy, and Culture at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Dr. Nieto has a B.A. from St. Johns University, a M.A. in Spanish and Hispanic Literature, and a PhD. From the University of Massachusetts in Curriculum Studies with an emphasis in multicultural and bilingual education. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>In addition, Dr. Nieto won the Multicultural Educator of the Year award in 1997. </li></ul></ul>

What do they believe? <ul><ul><li>Connecting with the individual culture of the student will create more success than forcing the child into mainstream culture. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Modifications need to be made to teaching so that the main focus is not on the dominant culture </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Teachers have an important role as learners in their classrooms. </li></ul></ul>

Implications for educators and students <ul><ul><li>Students and teachers take turns being the educator, thus creating a greater understanding of each other’s cultures. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Creating culturally relevant lesson plans helps students make neurological connections to better retain information presented. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Educators who have high expectations for their students prove that their children can, and will learn. </li></ul></ul>
