WHAT IS CLINICAL ENGINEERING?
Clinical engineering is a specialty within biomedical engineering responsible primarily for applying and
implementing medical technology to optimize efficient healthcare delivery. Biomedical engineering is the
application of techniques drawn from engineering to the analysis and solution of problems in biology and
medicine. Biomedical engineering applies techniques of all classical engineering disciplines to problems
encountered in living systems. Clinical Engineering related to the practical aspects of healthcare delivery
and hence is patient oriented.
The expectations of the delivery of better medical devices & equipment are growing because of
increasing focus on cost and complexity of healthcare delivery issues and increasing geriatric populations
around the world. The engineering profession is unique compared with others involved in the medical
sciences in that the majority of its members are employed or in some manner involved with industry. In
addition to Governmental systems, national and international professional societies of Clinical
Engineering get involve in following the statutory mechanism. The policies and procedures of professional
engineering societies are controlled by engineers normally at the management level of medical industries.
Generally the biomedical market is highly specialized. The health-care-delivery expands at a slow pace
but the medical science advances at a rapid pace, resulting in rapid growth of the biomedical engineering
industry.

CLINICAL ENGINEER?
The primary forces affecting the healthcare industry are technological, economic, regulatory and social.
Clinical engineers support and advance patient care delivery by applying sophisticated engineering and
managerial skills to healthcare technology. Clinical engineers can be based in hospitals, where
responsibilities can include managing the hospital’s medical equipment systems by equipment planning,
providing technical specifications, procuring equipment, installation & testing new equipment, safety
testing, preventive and breakdown maintenance and providing application training.
Clinical Engineer should ensure that all medical equipment are safe and effective, and they should work
with physicians to adapt instrumentation to meet the specific needs of the physician and the hospital. In
industry, clinical engineers can work in medical product development, from product design to manufacture
to sales and support. They should ensure that new products meet the current demands of medical
practice. In the current scenario health care involves extensive use of technologies, variety of equipment
and increased spending. Such advanced technologies can be efficiently and properly used only by
qualified and well-trained clinical engineers.
The role of clinical engineer also includes training and supervising biomedical equipment technicians and
in helping the governmental regulatory bodies in conducting hospital audits. They also acts as technology
consultant to other hospital staff such as doctors, administrators, paramedical staff etc. Clinical engineers
advise medical device manufacturers regarding prospective design improvements based on their clinical
experiences. They keep watch of the technological advancements, the clinical engineering and
instrumentation arena in order to review hospital procurement patterns accordingly.
The role of a clinical engineer is being redefined everyday as the areas of focus are fast changing .
Acroseas feels there’s an increasing need of coordination between the skilled staff within the healthcare
industry. On the front-end where the definition of ‘care’ is more towards patient’s health, the ‘care’ at the
back-end is more towards organization’s health. Technology bridges the inefficiencies between both the
ends and tries to optimize the means. This would be the way forward in the years to come where the role
of a clinical engineer and the process of clinical engineering hold crucial ground.
