  3. 3. The alarm clock rings. "Oh no; I don‛t want to get up yet," Rosa groans. She shoves Emil under her arm. Emil is her green elephant. Suddenly she remembers. "No playschool today. It‛s a holiday." Rosa is going to work with Daddy today. She‛s been looking forward to this all week. Daddy has a vveerryy eexxcciittiinngg jjoobb.. He‛s a reporter and writes stories for the newspaper. 1

  5. 5. Mommy and Daddy are sitting at the kitchen table and reading the newspaper. "Good morning, Rosa. I bet you and Emil are looking forward to all the things we‛re going to do today," says Daddy. 3
  6. 6. "We‛ll just read the newspaper a bit before we leave, so that we know what‛s been going on." Daddy reads out a report from the newspaper to Rosa. The phone rings. "We‛ll be over straight away," says Daddy. "Right, we have to rush off now. AA mmaarree hhaass jjuusstt given birth to twin foals down at the horse farm." 4
  7. 7. Rosa and Daddy are sitting in the car. Emil‛s head is sticking out of Rosa‛s bag. Rosa doesn‛t go anywhere without Emil. 5

Daddy asks him lots of questions and writes every-thing Mr. Wilks says down real fast in his notebook. "Are they boy horses or girls?" asks Rosa. "Two fine colts, playful young lads, my dear," he laughs friendly. 9
  12. 12. "I‛d call the smaller of them Emil. That‛s the name of my elephant," says Rosa, pointing to her elephant. "That‛s a good idea. Why not? Let‛s call him Emil!" says the man from the horse farm. Rosa is delighted. 10
  13. 13. "Next stop is a playground, Rosa. They have a huge slide there, the longest slide for miles around," Daddy says. 11
  14. 14. "Can I go on the slide with Emil?" Rosa asks all excited. "Of course you can," says Daddy. "And I‛ll take a photo of the two of you. Then you‛ll be in the newspaper tomorrow, too," says Daddy. "Great," says Rosa. 12
  15. 15. There‛s lots of activity going on at the playground. There are lots of kids standing around with their parents at the big long slide and looking up in awe. "Wow, it sure iiss lloonngg,,"" RRoossaa llooookkss up in amazement too. 13
  16. 16. Daddy says hello to a woman and shakes her hand. "We‛ve been waiting for you. Great, now we can open the slide," says the lady. The lady has a big fashion shop and she donated the slide. "That means she bought the slide and gave it as a present to tthhee ppllaayyggrroouunndd,,"" says Daddy. 14
  17. 17. "Hey, come on Rosa! You can go on the slide now," Daddy calls over to Rosa. Everyone looks at her as she slowly climbs the steps. Her knees start to shake. So she clings on to Emil, going up step by step. When she gets to the top of the slide, she sits down holding Emil on her lap. The children all look tiny from where she is. "My, but it is high hhiigghh up uupp here," hheerree,,"" she sshhee whispers into Emil‛s ear and waits there in silence a while. ` "Come on, Emil! Let‛s show the other kids how to do it," says Rosa. 15
  18. 18. She lets go and flies down the slide. The children all clap their hands and Daddy takes piles of photos of Rosa and Emil with his camera. Rosa is real proud. 16
  19. 19. 17 The next place Daddy goes is a big building site.
  20. 20. They are building a new railway tunnel for trains to go through. The foreman‛s name is Fred. Fred gives Daddy and Rosa a helmet. That‛s for safety, to protect their heads. Fred, Daddy and Rosa walk all over the huge building site wearing the helmets on their heads. Daddy asks the foreman heaps of questions. There are big diggers and cranes all oovveerr tthhee ppllaaccee.. 18
  21. 21. They stop in front of a great big hole made by a digger. Daddy takes a photo. "Boy, that sure is a deep hole," says Rosa to herself. She leans over the hole. Suddenly, Emil slips out of her bag and falls straight down into the great big hole. Rosa screams, "Emil!" Daddy ggrraabbss RRoossaa bbyy the arm to make sure she doesn‛t jump in after Emil. Rosa starts to cry. Fred the Foreman tells her it will be alright and thinks hard about what to do. 19
  22. 22. After a few minutes, Fred has a good idea. "We‛ll be able to get Emil out of the hole with our digger." The driver of the digger gently scoops the little elephant out of the hhoollee aanndd ppllaannttss hhiimm right beside Rosa. Rosa is happy again. 20
  23. 23. "Now we have to drive back to the news office," says Daddy. Daddy still has a lot of things to do. He has to type everything that Rosa and Daddy saw today into the computer. That will go into tomorrow‛s newspaper. 21

  28. 28. "It‛s still warm," says Rosa. And the photo of Rosa and Emil on the big slide is right in the middle of the first page of the newspaper! "Am I famous?" asks Rosa. "I think you are," Daddy answers. 26
  29. 29. Reporter A reporter writes stories for the newspaper. Reporters go to see things as they happen, like when the children go on the big slide in the playground. Report Reports are stories about what happens in your town and all over the world. News staff All the reporters and photographers who work for a newspaper are the news staff. They work in the news office. Printing shop When all the reports, photographs and other things are ready, big machines print ink onto paper , cut the paper and make it into newspapers. The machines are in a printing shop.

  32. 32. That looks great! 31 … and the other edge towards the back. Now all you need to do is turn in the corners that are sticking out. It will hold better if you use some tape.
