  2. 2. Foundations <ul><li>Islam began in the Arabian Peninsula within Arab Bedouin culture. </li></ul><ul><li>Bedouin culture was largely nomadic and polytheistic. </li></ul>
  3. 5. Foundations <ul><li>Muhammad was a merchant who had experienced a revelation of God (Allah) that would begin the new religion. </li></ul><ul><li>Muhammad’s teachings challenged the religious (polytheism) and political structures (clan) of the region. </li></ul>

Spread <ul><li>After Muhammad gained followers and won a civil war against other clan leaders, more groups joined him. </li></ul><ul><li>Within decades, Muhammad and his followers expanded their control and gained followers of Islam throughout the Arabian peninsula. </li></ul><ul><li>MILITARY and IDEAS </li></ul>
  5. 7. Spread <ul><li>The next centuries saw rapid expansion of the Islamic empire. </li></ul>
  6. 9. Spread <ul><li>As it spread, Arabic language and culture united the empire. </li></ul>
  7. 10. Spread & CHANGE <ul><li>Soon after Muhammad’s death, two groups developed as a result of conflicting ideas about leadership. </li></ul><ul><li>Sunni and Shi’a branches of Islam continued to split into smaller groups. </li></ul>
  8. 12. Spread & CHANGE <ul><li>As Islam spread into other regions it influenced the cultures. </li></ul><ul><li>New cultures also influenced elements of Islam. </li></ul>

  10. 14. Texts <ul><li>The Quran contains the revelations given to Muhammad. </li></ul><ul><li>The Hadith are the teachings and actions of Muhammad. </li></ul>
