  2. 2. Byzantine Empire – Eastern Europe The eastern part of the Roman Empire remained with Roman traditions and Greek culture.  Its military, culture, and commerce remained strong after the fall of the Western part of the Roman Empire. 
  3. 3. Western Europe  Central government broke down and trade was disrupted  Cities were abandoned and population centers shifted to rural areas.  Christianity remained a major unifying force throughout most of Western Europe. Christianity spread to the Germanic tribes.
