4. 4. Chapter 2 Do or Die
The seven lessons in this chapter are devoted to art of motivating without middle ground. They present principles for prompting maximum effort in situations that offer the highest stakes, the greatest risk, and the greatest opportunities.
LESSON 7: DON’T WAIT
The greatest change begins with the single person, and that the change begins the moment person begins it. Begin your project, however ambitious it is, with yourself. Begin Now.
LESSON 8: NO STRATEGY WITHOUT TACTICS.
Military commanders have understood that even the great strategy is useless without a great tactics. Any general’s planning must dig below the level of strategy to tactics. So a CEO must integrate strategy and tactics into the planning for creating the best fit between concept and execution.
LESSON 9: HARNESS THE ENERGY OF IMPERFECTION
Gandhi’s entire life work is demonstration that forward progress requires both preparedness for failure and strength for recovery. Do not hesitate to set perfection as the goal of your organization , but, in doing you must also recognize that only imperfection will move you and your enterprise toward that goal. For this reason, never criticize imperfection. Nurture it, exploit it. Manage it. It is fuel that drives every worthwhile endeavor.
www.shareoftime.blogspot.com
5. 5. Chapter 2 Do or Die
LESSON 10: STAY DISSATISFIED
The best CEO’s conduct only unfinished symphonies. Goal exist to inspire ambitious aspiration, not to be attained, and if you ever find your organization reaching the goal, figure out the way to move the goal post. It is far better to stay dissatisfied- or to recognize, as Gandhi advised, that true satisfaction lies in the effort rather than in the attainment.
LESSON 11: THE TRAGEDY OF TIME LOST
While business professional are accustomed to accounting for and auditing the expenditure of money, even more care should be devoted to tracking time. Time is entirely non renewable, and whether spent, invested, or simple lost, it is consumed. There is at least chance of recovering money that has been misspent or lost, but time lost is lost forever, and irrecoverable loss is very essence of tragedy.
www.shareoftime.blogspot.com
6. 6. Chapter 2 Do or Die
LESSON 12: EXPECT SUCCESS
A fatal strategy is to allow the anticipation of trouble to paralyze you or your enterprise. Hope is not a substitute for strategy, but rather a necessary ingredient in any worthwhile strategic plan.
LESSON 13: BE MISERLY WITH YOUR INSPIRATIONAL CURRENCY
Here is a mantra, a short one, that I give you. You may imprint it on your hearts and let every breath of yours give expression to it. The Mantra is “Do or Die”.
- Speech at AICC meeting, August 8, 1942
www.shareoftime.blogspot.com
