The Nervous System

 1. 1. Regulation:The Nervous System Class Notes September 26, 2007
 2. 2. What are the parts of the Nervous System? The nervous system plays a major role in regulation. Nervous System Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) Central Nervous System (CNS) Nerves or Neurons Brain Spinal Cord
 3. 3. PNS: Nerve cell or Neuron
 4. 4. Nerves

Nerves: bundles of neurons

4 types of neurons:

- Sensory Neurons

- Motor Neurons

- Mixed nerves

- Interneurons

 5. 5. CNS: This is your Brain

Cerebrum: 4 lobes

Cerebellum: balance and coordination

Medulla: involuntary functions (e.g. heartbeat)

Brainstem: regulates basic functions

 6. 6. This is Homer’s Brain
 7. 7. CNS: Spinal Cord

Mass of nerve cells protected by bones called vertebrae

Part of the CNS

Relays impulses to the brain

 8. 8. Nerve Regulation: What happened during the water lab?

Stimulus: a specific change in the environment that affects the nervous system (ex: change in water temp)

Impulse: electrical or chemical message that is carried by nerve cells; sent to CNS to interpret message (ex: message was carried to the brain through nerve impulses)

Response: reaction to the stimulus (ex: cold water feeling hot and hot water feeling cold when placed in med temp)

 9. 9. Reflex Arc
