King Charles II renamed it for his brother James, the Duke of York.  New Amsterdam became New York City.  New Jersey started as a proprietary colony, but became a royal colony.
  5. 5. Pennsylvania  Settled by Quakers:  All have an inner light  All are equal  Against slavery  Women allowed to lead  Persecuted by Church of England fro refusal to pay taxes to it  William Penn’s Holy Experiment  Bought land from natives
