A new study found that people who received frequent dental x-rays before radiation doses were lowered may be at greater risk of developing nonthreatening meningioma brain tumors. Meningioma tumors affect the brain lining and spinal cord, and are benign in over 90% of cases but can grow large enough to impact brain function. The study found those with tumors were over twice as likely to report frequent bitewing x-rays, especially at a young age, and bitewing x-rays which allow views of back teeth use radiation which has been linked to tumor growth.
