  3. 3. Tobacco free <ul><li>All tobacco disappears or… </li></ul><ul><li>Huge black market! </li></ul><ul><li>Farmers, traders, sellers, factory workers, etc. lose their jobs </li></ul><ul><li>Crime picks up </li></ul><ul><li>An impossible situation for the suffering addicts! </li></ul>

Tobacco control <ul><li>Tobacco no longer treated as an ordinary consumer product, but as a harmful drug </li></ul><ul><li>Tobacco use declines; problems associated with tobacco also decline </li></ul><ul><li>Tobacco remains, so do jobs, so does the product’s availability for the addicted </li></ul>

  6. 6. What works…the industry view <ul><li>School programs: you’re too young! </li></ul><ul><li>Voluntary restrictions: let the industry decide! </li></ul><ul><li>Keep taxes low, allow ads, vague pack warnings, respect “freedom to smoke” </li></ul>

What works…the activists’ view (International lessons) <ul><li>Higher taxes </li></ul><ul><li>Complete ban on advertising </li></ul><ul><li>Smoke-free places </li></ul><ul><li>Strong and pictorial warnings </li></ul><ul><li>Public education in combination with above </li></ul><ul><li>COMPREHENSIVE TOBACCO CONTROL </li></ul>

What can I do? <ul><li>Goal of this training: learn to be an activist! </li></ul><ul><li>Campaign for taxes, ad ban, smoke-free public places, stronger warnings </li></ul><ul><li>Recruit more youth and adults to the movement </li></ul><ul><li>Remember tobacco control, not tobacco free </li></ul><ul><li>The power is with us! </li></ul>
