For those procurement professionals who have been in the industry for a certain amount of time, Gartner's assessment relating to what the analyst firm called "the postmodern" ERP era was a bellwether statement that was long overdue, especially given the challenges that these "legacy" systems presented in critical areas such as operational efficiency related to the procurement process, and big data analytics.
However, going from a legacy system environment to the promise of the virtual cloud is not a technology only transformation. It requires a revision of our thinking as a profession as a whole so that we can move outside of the framework of our familiar roles to understand how we can leverage technological breakthroughs to maximize both our impact on and value to our organizations.
