How to Create Graphs

  2. 3. Building Your Graphs with Excel <ul><li>Log on to the SMG using your User Name and Password </li></ul>
  3. 5. <ul><li>Click on the Investor Research link in the blue TRADING menu. </li></ul>
  4. 7. <ul><li>Type in the Ticker for the Stock you are interested in looking up and click GO </li></ul>
  5. 9. <ul><li>Double Click on the Graph to enlarge. </li></ul>
  6. 11. <ul><li>Change the Time Frame to 2 months so you can view the weeks of the SMG 10/2/06 – 12/08/06. </li></ul><ul><li>Change the Frequency to weekly . </li></ul>
  7. 13. READING THE GRAPH <ul><li>Looking at the first bar on the graph (Oct), move your finger up to find the X axis of the graph. </li></ul><ul><li>Then move your finger across to the right to find the close price located on the right. (This price is the Y axis for 10/6/06.) </li></ul><ul><li>Follow this same procedure for each bar to fill in your Excel Spreadsheet for 10/2/06 – 12/08/06. </li></ul>

MAKING YOUR GRAPH IN EXCEL After you fill in all of your closing prices, you will need to create your graph. <ul><li>Click on the first close price. </li></ul><ul><li>While having this selected, hold down shift and click on your last close price which will highlight/select all of your closing prices. </li></ul><ul><li>Then click on insert chart. </li></ul><ul><li>Click on the Line chart type. </li></ul><ul><li>Click Next . </li></ul>
  9. 18. <ul><li>Click on the Series tab . </li></ul><ul><li>Click on the right side of the Name box. </li></ul><ul><li>Click on the cell that has the name of your stock. </li></ul><ul><li>Click on the right side of the Source Data: Name to return back to your graph. </li></ul>
  10. 21. <ul><li>Click to the right of the Category (X) axis labels. </li></ul><ul><li>Click on week 1 , hold down the Shift key, and then select week 9 to select weeks 1-9. </li></ul>
  11. 24. <ul><li>Click on the right of the Chart Wizard – Step 2 of 4 – Chart Source Data – Category (X) to return back to your graph. </li></ul>
  12. 27. <ul><li>Click Next </li></ul><ul><li>Type in the Chart Title </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) 10/02/06 – 12/08/06 </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Type in the Category (X) axis: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Week # </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Type in the Value (Y) axis: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Closing Prices </li></ul></ul>

  14. 32. <ul><li>Click File and Click Save As </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Click on your H drive </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Change the File Name to: SMG Graphs </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Save </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Click on your graph to select. </li></ul><ul><li>Click File and Click Print </li></ul><ul><li>Create a cover sheet in Word with the name of your group members. </li></ul><ul><li>Staple your Cover Sheet and all of your graphs together and turn in! </li></ul>
