3. 3. Budapest
 4. 4.

The Váci utca was the first street in downtown Budapest to be pedestrianized, but it was one of the best places for shopping long before this change. The street was formed in the 18th century but most houses date back to the 19th and early 20th century. It quickly became the shopping centre and later the esplanade of the Pest side.

 5. 5.

The Central Market Hall

The building, raised in 1895-97 according to plans by Samu

Petz, remained the biggest Market-Hall in the city throughout the

years. Today it attracts shoppers for its spaciousness and

architectural decor.

 6. 6.

The Gellért Thermal Bath known world-wide and highly favoured by foreigners, built in a secession style, opened its gates in 1918. We find records about the "miraculous" springs spurting up on the territory of the Bath from as early a date as the 15th century. These springs were later favoured by the Turks as well, as they were larger and hotter than the Buda baths of the period.

 7. 7.

The Hungarian National Museum is one of the finest examples of Hungarian Classicism. Hungarian history is presented from the foundation of the state up until 1990. The Hungarian Holy Crown and the Crown Jewels were previsouly displayed here, but on 1st of January 2000 they were moved to the Parlament and now are exhibited there.

 8. 8.

It is a white-stoned fortress from the 19th century on the top of Gellért Hill, crowned by the 14 m tall Liberation Monument, a striking statue of a woman holding a palm leaf of victory. The fortress was built in 1851 by the Austrians symbolizing their power over the Hungarians after the 1848-49 Revolution and War of Independence. The Monument was raised by the Russians in 1947. It offers a wonderful panorama of the whole city.

Citadel
