  7. 7. «Why do you want to become a leader?» A lot of people see leadership as a way to accelerate their rise to power, wealth or fame, and not necessarily as a way to inspire and empower constituents to deliver the best quality of service to external and internal clients, as well as to all stakeholders. Most leadership development programs focus on teaching strategies to move people towards goals, but not necessarily on building the right motives to lead or on mastering the mind processes involved in (un)ethical leadership behavior. Unethical leaders become blinded by arrogance and greed, and end-up loosing the trust of their constituents and stakeholders. We need new generations of effective values-driven leaders, who are genuinely concerned about the wellbeing of all their fellow citizens, and who are committed to consistently lead with universal values. We have been working with leaders from different parts of the world to understand how they manage to develop strong ethical leadership capacities. We work on mindsets, skillsets and character to help leaders develop higher levels of personal mastery, effective team leadership skills and capacities to develop other leaders in their organizations and communities. WHY "It is by practicing the right actions that we become righteous… and courageous actions that we become courageous" Aristotle 4
  8. 8. Fig.1 Top 3 Causes of unethical behavior in the workplace Survey conducted by the Human Resource Institute (HRI) and commissioned by American Management Association (AMA) Our schooling systems tend to encourage students to develop a competitive mindset instead of a collaborative mindset, which continues to influence their behaviour in the workplace and often push them to act unethically to gain an advantage over their coworkers, or to avoid negative consequences. A recent survey conducted by the Human Resource Institute (HRI) and commissioned by the American Management Association (AMA) has revealed the top 3 factors that encourage unethical behaviour in the workplace: WHY 5 Pressures to meet unrealistic deadlines Desire to further one’s career Desire to protect one’s livelihood
  9. 9. HOW ETHICAL CAPACITY LEADERSHIP CAPACITY Source: Center for Creative Leadership, Handbook of Leadership Development Unless ethical leadership development grows out of a clear conceptual framework, the result can be confusing, simplistic or just plain wrong. There are two reasons for devising a “model” for ethical leadership development: 1-It breaks the idea of ethical leadership into components that can be analyzed 2-It connects ethical leadership as a concept to ethical leadership as an activity Conceptual frameworks help design effective training & development programs to build and assess ethical leadership capacities. Therefore, we will briefly describe below one of the most popular evidence-based ethical leadership development frameworks, developed by the Center for Creative Leadership. 6
  10. 10. HOW Taking on the role of a leader is a ‘‘stretching’’ experience. In order to take on broader responsibilities, a person must acquire additional skills and master some key leadership challenges. Researchers at the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL) define leadership development as: ‘‘the expansion of a person’s capacity to be effective in leadership roles and processes’’ CHALLENGE As long as people don’t feel the need to change, they won’t. The most powerful leadership experiences challenge people. Tough situations force leaders out of their comfort zone and give them opportunities to practice new skills. SELF- ASSESSMENT Assessment data leads to self-evaluation. By asking themselves questions like: ‘‘What am I doing well?’’ or ‘‘How do I need to improve?’’, leaders can learn to identify gaps between their current situation and where they need to be. SUPPORT To make the most of challenges, leaders need support and positive feedback. The most common source of support is other people (family, co-workers,), but developing leaders can also tap into organizational learning resources or relevant personal development readings. Source: Center for Creative Leadership, Handbook of Leadership Development LEADERSHIP CAPACITY 7
  11. 11. HOW To develop their ethical capacity, leaders need to increase their understanding, sharpen their skills, broaden their worldview, and strengthen their motivation to act ethically in every situation. Source: Center for Creative Leadership, Handbook of Leadership Development KNOWLEDGE Learning about ethical standards and principles that help make wiser ethical choices. MOTIVATION Acting upon reasoned ethical choices largely depends on one’s level of motivation to stand up for what is right, at the risk of experiencing retaliation from others. PERSPECTIVE A leader needs to be able to get some perspective on his/her own reasoning (hypothesis, limits, flaws…) and to be open to approach ethical issues from other stakeholders’ perspectives. SKILLS Learning the skills needed to reason ethically and to act upon reasoned ethical choices. Resisting pressures to act unethically, enncouraging ethical behavior and discouraging unethical behavior. 8 ETHICAL CAPACITY Ethical Leadership Development Model
  12. 12. Discovering Biographies of Inspiring Historical Role Models Watching short video biographies (5-10mins) of historical leaders who modeled exemplary leadership, based on humility and moral courage. Discussing key leadership challenges these leaders faced and sharing lessons learned help participants find inspiration and develop strategies to model ethical leadership in tough situations. HOW 9
