22. In the past three years, we have seen several
major investments and significant changes
amongst inkjet printhead players, in what once
was a mature market. OEM printhead makers are
in fierce competition to access the new business
opportunities available through the use of inkjet
printheads. From thermal to piezo printheads,
conventional to MEMS technologies, and
consumer to industrial printing, major drivers are
reshaping the printhead industry and expanding
OEM manufacturers’ product portfolios.
With ¥20B (about $190M) invested in new
factories, Epson is now ready to expand its
PrecisionCore technology and its related
printhead portfolio to serve the professional
market, based on its latest MEMS piezoelectric
development. The first products were shipped
in spring 2019 from Epson’s new cleanroom and
fully automated assembly lines. Konica Minolta, in
the race to invest in MEMS technology, acquired
Panasonic’s printhead assets in mid-2018, and
will benefit from the company’s latest thin-film
piezoelectric development, preparing the next
generation of printheads to serve industrial
printing markets like textile, packaging, and
functional printing.
The biodispensing market is also taking shape,
beginning with Cellink acquiring Cytena
for around €30M (about $33M). With this
acquisition, Cellink, a 3D bioprinting tool
provider, aims to penetrate the pharmaceutical
market with single-cell technology platform from
Cytena. Also, a surprise has arrived in the form
of RealFast Print Technology (Suzhou Ruifa), a
subsidiary of Anoky Group. Similar to MEMJET’s
emergence about a decade ago, this new OEM
printhead manufacturer revealed in late-2018 the
availability of its thermal MEMS printhead, while
also having developed piezo printheads. In this
report, discover the printhead market’s latest
developments, including how Epson’s expansion
strategy will impact the industry, and how new
players can enter this highly competitive market.

$3.3B REVENUE EXPECTED IN 2024, WITH A TWO-TIER DEVELOPING
INDUSTRY
With $3.3B revenue expected in 2024
(CAGR2018-2024
= +4,7%) industrial printing is fuelling
printhead market growth with 13.2% CAGR year-
over-year (YoY) for the same period. Changes in
end-user needs, customization, and point-of-need
requirements are motivating the industrial market,
fostering digital printing with a huge interest in
inkjet technology. Piezoelectric ejection printheads
are dominant in industrial printing applications,
with more than 85% of printhead shipments based
on conventional technologies (non-MEMS based
printheads). On the other hand, the consumer
market is expected to continue decreasing (despite
a small rebound from HP in 2018), due partially to
its ink loyalty program. AYoY decrease of 1.1% for
consumer and office printing is forecast until 2024,

are not fully offset by office printing, despite the
launch of full-page-width printhead module-based
printers from the three top players: HP, Canon, and
Epson. HP still leads the consumer and office printing
market with 32% market share, but for everyone else
the cake is shrinking.
This report highlights the main market trends for
printhead devices, from consumer to functional
printing,and through graphics,industrial,and 3D inkjet
printing. Yole Développement also describes the
evolution of the MEMS and conventional printhead
markets, and provides 2018 - 2024 penetration rates
for the main applications.
From graphic printing with colour-ink ejection,
printheads are becoming increasingly like
manufacturing tools. Gaining in maturity and
quality, printheads enable the ejection of specialty
inks with pigments or titanium dioxide, challenging
white-based inks, and functional inks like conductive
metal inks and dielectric inks. Moreover, the
growth opportunities in industrial markets for
packaging applications, printed electronics, display,
and biodispensing are contributing substantially to
technology improvement. In fact, high-resolution
printing for improved image quality has caused most
piezoelectric printhead players serving industrial
markets to expand their product portfolio with
MEMS printheads, using thin-film PZT technologies.
Fujifilm Dimatix, Xaar, and Océ-Canon are already
paving the way for MEMS thin-film piezo printheads,
while Ricoh and Konica Minolta (through the
Panasonic acquisition) will follow soon after with
new MEMS heads. Thin-film PZT deposition is
a real challenge, one that requires considerable
experience. Some MEMS foundries are supporting
certain OEM printhead makers to subcontract this
particular manufacturing step, while other players
are internalizing MEMS production.
This report describes and focuses on MEMS
piezo thin-film technology - specifically, its player
ecosystem (with material providers), MEMS
foundries, and OEM MEMS printhead makets. This
report also discusses how conventional printhead
makers are still innovating in this area, i.e. Kyocera
improving its bulk PZT technology.
New challenges are appearing, along with new
market opportunities: recirculation ink printheads
to avoid clogging, single-pass printhead modules to
increase productivity, thermal-based biodispensing
tools using bio-liquids, and more. There is no doubt
about it: inkjet printheads have a very bright future.
