Coburg a new paradigm for water supply

  1. 1. Yarra Valley Water Business Breakfast 24 November 2010 Coburg Principal Activity Centre Stormwater Harvesting and Reuse Project
  2. 2. January 29, 2015 Yarra Valley Water Ltd 2
  3. 3. January 29, 2015 3Yarra Valley Water Ltd Background - Population  Victorian Government’s Melbourne 2030 Strategy: • 5 M population for Melbourne by 2030 • 26 Principle Activity Centres (PAC) identified • Coburg identified as a PAC  Large amount of infill development expected: • 4,000 plus new residential dwellings • 65,000 m2 of commercial/retail floor space • 1400 new permanent jobs plus 10,000 temporary jobs during construction • $900M worth of investment in local economy
  4. 4. January 29, 2015 5Yarra Valley Water Ltd Background – Stormwater  Increased urbanisation resulting in more stormwater runoff  Further environmental degradation to waterways • Nutrient loading • Increased sedimentation  Run off capable (in many cases) to supply incremental increase in demand
  5. 5. January 29, 2015 6Yarra Valley Water Ltd Background (Continued)  New paradigm created: • Harnessing alternative water supplies • Sustainable principles • Long term environmental benefits  Council now pushing developers to apply ESD principles: • Focus on reducing potable consumption  Outcome - Stormwater harvesting
  6. 6. January 29, 2015 7Yarra Valley Water Ltd YVW Coburg Proposal  Harvest stormwater from two existing drains (MW and Council) which run along the boundary of the proposed site  Treat the stormwater to a very high recycled water standard  Reticulate the recycled water to: • All new houses/apartments within a designated area for toilet flushing, laundry and outdoor uses • Nearby public open spaces for irrigation
  7. 7. January 29, 2015 8Yarra Valley Water Ltd Project Benefits  213 ML/year of potable water substituted  Much better stormwater quality than is currently the case: • Stormwater is currently untreated • Nitrogen – 22 % reduction • Phosphorous – 42 % reduction • Reduced sediment loading  Reduced urban run off to Merri Creek – 21 %  Recycled water available for open space irrigation
  8. 8. January 29, 2015 Yarra Valley Water Ltd 9 Harvesting Stormwater Underground Low Level Tank (7ML) Diversion 2 Diversion 1 Urquhart Street Drain (675mm) Harding Street Drain (2.4m x 1.2m) Relocated Tennis Courts RWTP Underground High Level Tank (7ML) Third Pipe
  9. 9. January 29, 2015 Yarra Valley Water Ltd 10 Areas To Be Supplied With Recycled Water
  10. 10. January 29, 2015 Yarra Valley Water Ltd 11 Underground tanks will use pre cast concrete culvert type sections Proposed Underground Storage Tank Solution
  11. 11. January 29, 2015 Yarra Valley Water Ltd 12 A packaged ultra-filtration treatment plant system will be used to produce Class A recycled water Recycled Water Treatment Plant
  12. 12. January 29, 2015 13Yarra Valley Water Ltd Moving Forward  Federal Govt. grant of $6.6M approved for Project  Detailed planning with Moreland Council in progress  Design work for underground tanks/pumps etc underway  Construction to start Aug 2011  Pro Active Community & Stakeholder Consultation planned to start January 2011
