CATOGORIES
A sheet of material made by bonding two or more
sheet or layers.
It is made out of paper, at the base there is a graph
paper, in the middle there is a normal paper and at
top there may be two papers Indian paper or
European paper.

Manufacturing of laminates
ADVANTAGES
 It is easy to clean.
 It is easier to install than many traditional surfaces.
 It is more economical and requires less skill to install.
 It is available in numerous designs, patterns, colors and textures and hence it is pleasing.
 It is very durable, hygienic and relatively easy to maintain.
 No polishing painting is required.
 It is the best choice for heavy use environments.
 It can be installed over almost any existing floor.
 It is moisture resistant. Also, it is an impact, shock and pressure resistant.
 Sweeping or vacuuming is typical, all it takes to get laminate clean.
 Itis highly resistant to scratch and abrasion.
 Availability of huge range leads to least wastage.
DISADVANTAGES
 While it can follow the look of a veneer, laminate does not come close to the feel of those
textures of a veneer. No matter how high in quality, it cannot simulate the feel of real wood
under your feet.
 It is known to be toxic as it is known to release formaldehyde, the volatile organic
compounds.
 Once the top layer has been worn through, the laminate must be replaced.
 It is difficult to be recycled.
 It is a brittle material hence is prone to clipping.
 In case of Laminate flooring, it has has been very slippery, and affecting your safety.
It cannot be used as exterior.
It is affected by sunlight(color fades).

VENEER
INTRODUCTION
•Veneer refers to thin slices of wood and sometimes
bark, usually thinner than 3 mm, that typically are glued
onto core panels to introduce flat panels such as doors,
tops and panels for cabinets, parquet floors and parts of
furniture.
•They are also used in marquetry.
CHARACTERISTICS
•Recyclability and renewability- Wood has the least
impact on total energy use, greenhouse gases, air and
water pollution, solid waste and ecological resource use.
70% less energy is required in the use of wood
compared to any other building materials.
•Sustainability- Using veneer extends the use of a piece
of timber. The wood that might be used in one solid
piece a few visible cm wide can cover a far greater area
when used as a veneer.
•Toxicity- Nontoxic; veneer stores carbon and also
maximises the use of harvested wood.
MANUFACTURING
PROCESS
Manufacturing of veneer
Decorative timber veneer is generally manufactured from the
highest quality logs. This means there are no faults such as
knots, discolouration or gum vein. It is a visual grade rather
than structural.
1. SLICING AND PELLING
Veneer logs are steamed or picked to soften
their structure and are then sliced or rotary
peeled into leaves. The thickness of these
leaves generally varies from 0.80 to 3mm.
2. GRADING AND JOINING
Veneer are next graded for quality, width, appearance and length and
selected for use.
3. PRESSING
The resulting sheets of veneer or ‘lay ons’
are then pressed onto sheet material. This substrate may be MDF,
particleboard or plywood depending on the end use
The individual leaves of veneer are then straightened and cut to a consistent width on a guillotine, before
being joined.
Bundles if veneer are next selected of use. Much goes into the production of veneered panels for the use in
architectural situations such as wall and ceiling panels.
ADVANTAGES
 Aesthetics like NaturalWood with Low Cost
 Flexibility in Designs
 Increased Strength and Durability
 Eco-Friendly
 Better way ofWood Utilization
 Non-toxic
DISADVANTAGES
 Susceptible toWater Damage
 Installation Requires Skilled Workers
 More Maintenance
 Cannot be Repaired
 Formation of Cracks
