Also be sure to mark ‘City of God - 10 Years Later’ special evening with after-party in your diary, as well the UK Premiere of ‘The Pit’ by acclaimed author Ricardo Íscar. Both unmissable! As you can see by this small sample above, we have prepared a rich selection of films, which will be complemented by exhibitions and events to celebrate Ibero-American culture. Only one other ingredient is needed… you! (¡Vosotros! / Voces!) Documentary filmmaker Mar Felices and Spanish film collective Cinemaattic are joining forces this year to share their passion for Ibero- American documentary film by introducing IBERODOCS - the first showcase of Ibero- American culture in Scotland, focused on documentary films by Spanish, Portuguese and Latin-American filmmakers. For our inaugural edition - taking place from Thursday the 3rd to Sunday the 6th April - we have programmed a selection of works from both emerging and award-winning documentary filmmakers which will focus on the topics of mental health, migration & integration, and rural landscapes. Alongside Festival partners Filmhouse Cinema & Scottish Documentary Institute we invite you to embark on this journey through film to the distant waters of the Iberian Peninsula and on towards Latin America, to find what unites us and differentiates us as global citizens. We can promise it will be an unforgettable journey. This festival is produced by Xose-Ramón Rivas on behalf of Cinemaattic Productions CIC, Community Interest Company registered in Scotland (SC464771). ¡Nos vemos en el cine! 10. 10. Ciudade de Deus - 10 Anos Depois Cavi Borges and Luciano Vidigal • Brazil 2013 • 75m Digital • Portuguese with English Subtitles • UK PREMIERE Ten years after the Rio de Janeiro slum burst into the world’s consciousness with the hit film ‘City of God’ by Fernando Meirelles, very little has changed for the residents as well as the actors who took part. Recruited from the favelas in which the fiction film’s story unfolds, the people who portrayed Dadinho, Bené, and Li’l Zé, actress Alice Braga and musician/actor Seu Jorge find themselves back in front of the cameras in this documentary to reveal the mixed fortunes they’ve enjoyed since the film’s release in 2002. -- City of God – 10 Years Later Sat 5 Apr at 20:50 Venue: Filmhouse Video introduction by the director ‘Cavi’ Borges. Official after-party at Boteco do Brasil from 10pm to follow with free admission for filmgoers (wristbands will be handed out). 23 March - 09 April 2014 Venue: Filmhouse Cafe Bar 88 Lothian Rd, Edinburgh EH3 9BZ Admission: Free Curator: Isabel Moura Mendes Photography by: Daniela Cantagalli An exhibition of 26 photographies documenting the Rio de Janeiro slum which, until Fernando Meirelles’ 2002 hit film, was considered a non-entry war zone to cameras. A decade later, through director Cavi Borges’ lens we find that sadly, the ‘after’ is still terribly similar to the ‘before’ in that part of Brazil’s most iconic city. However, beyond the prevailing drug trafficking, the militias, and the violence; there is another element that seems to have remained: the sense of a community of people bonded by the hope of a better future. Still to come, it seems. This exhibition accompanies the screening of the documentary ‘City of God - 10 years later’ screening on Saturday, 5 April 20:50, part of the IBERODOCS festival programme. * The film ‘City of God - 10 Years Later’ will be preceded at 18:00 by the screening of ‘City of God’ (2002) by Fernando Meirelles & Kátia Lund, brought in partnership with Filmhouse. 11. 11. The Shepherd’s Oasis El oasis del pastor Mar Felices • Spain 2012 • 53m Digital • Spanish, Arab with English subtitles • UK PREMIERE Solitude is the shepherd’s eternal companion, a truth as old as the thousand-year-old tree that he sits beneath alongside his flock, watching the hours go by. Yet, the leaves rustling in the passing wind may be an omen of change in Antonio Roja’s life. The arrival of Karim, a Moroccan who has managed to cross the sea to come to a new land, solid, though unknown, may be disquieting for them both. The Stone La piedra Victor Moreno Rodríguez • Spain 2013 • 47m Digital • Spanish with English subtitles • UK PREMIERE To a minimalist symphony composed of the sounds of the wind and blows of metal upon stone, a man tackles a rock formation with a sledgehammer. Victor Moreno records this silent Sisyphean labour through tight and wide shots in keeping with the surroundings. A musing on this old-fashioned action in the era of modern technology and its unbearable lightness of being. Sigo siendo (Kachqaniraqmi) Javier Corcuera • Peru 2012 • 110m DCP • Quechua Chanka, Shipibo Conibo, Spanish with English subtitles • UK PREMIERE Kachqaniraqmi is a film about musicians, their stories, the stories they tell with their music, and their relationship with the vast and spectacular Peruvian territory.
