Why you should offer work experience

I was lucky. During my education years I got not one but three opportunities for work experience. That's three more than most. Why lucky? Because it helped shape my decisions as to what I wanted to do when I left education and, crucially, what it meant to have to work at my chosen profession. More people should have that opportunity.

  3. 3. My Story I was lucky enough to get 3 work experience placements including a year at IBM. This is me (at the back) suited and booted ready for a day’s work.
  4. 4. What I Learnt I went from student to employee very quickly and found that I was doing something that I loved. I wouldn’t have got that from my course alone.
  5. 5. Giving Something Back Having learnt so much I wanted others to have the same opportunity. This is Chris, an apprentice that worked for me, being filmed by the BBC.

  7. 7. Idea of Working Life Casual jobs don’t equip you for a career. Work experience helps an individual work out whether a particular career is right for them.
  8. 8. Confidence Being in any work environment brings an understanding of responsibility.
  9. 9. Payment You must pay the individual, even if it is a token amount. This will mean a great deal and make the experience worthwhile.

  11. 11. It Feels Good You’ll get a warm fuzzy glow from giving an individual a step up.
  12. 12. Get Something Done It is an opportunity to get that project off the ground that you had been meaning to start.
  13. 13. Extended Interview It's a way to check out potential employees. If they are right offer them a job for when they graduate.
  14. 14. Cost Effective Students cost less than a full time employee but they are not a replacement.
