7 Questions on Leadership with William H. Bender.pdf

I was thrilled to be contacted by the co-founder of Clarity Group Global, Jonno White, for this interview, 7 Questions on Leadership. The 7 Questions asked by Jonno took me back to a chance meeting with a ProStart Student I met in Chicago at the National Restaurant Show. His name is LeBrandon Hickey. He was visiting the NRA Show with his high school Foodservice ProStart Class. I gave him a copy of the One Minute Manager by Ken Blanchard and Spencer Johnson and asked him to read it. I asked him to send me an email after reading it. Working as a Volunteer with several Restaurant Industry leaders like Ron Yudd and Bruce Faber, we would conduct the NRA Show ProStart Orientation for several thousand of these students each year at the NRA Show. I had asked many students to read The One Minute Manager and email me. LeBrandon was the very first student that followed through. We have developed a long-lasting professional relationship that is still active. Mr. Hickey has been successful in his food service career, and I am very proud of him.

Every day, I coach and facilitate
executive team retreats for some of the
greatest leaders in the world.
Due to confidentiality, when someone

HOW DID YOU BECOME A LEADER?
CAN YOU PLEASE BRIEFLY TELL THE STORY?
I was taught as a young teen to take pride in my work and do it correctly.
I was athletic and competitive. I applied (entry-level - busser/dishwasher)
and was hired by Steak and Ale Restaurants at a soon-to-open unit in
Rockville, Maryland.
I worked hard and fast and did the job right. I was recognized quickly by
the Managers and Corporate level leaders. S&A was a fast-growing brand
with excellent leadership and support. They modeled good leadership
and communication and were willing to share and teach us. They asked
me to train new employees.
I was given promotions with increased responsibilities and was soon a
kitchen manager at this high-volume unit. I joined the company when it
had 18 restaurants, growing to over 400 restaurants during the next few
years. The people I worked with created a network of opportunities
throughout my career.

My wife and I are early risers, 4:30 - 5 a.m. We start the day with Hot Tea
and newspapers, including the WSJ. I then go to my athletic club for
exercise. I'm usually at the office by 8 a.m. I have my calendar and calls or
appointments scheduled.
I have already prepared my daily tasks of work that needs completing.
The coffee pot is a necessity. Depending on the workflow, there is time
for reading, research, or marketing during the day. I work with clients off-
site and on-site, and that requires travel for projects that are out of town.
I stay current on my restaurant and food service clients/industry via trade
publications and websites. We have an early dinner, 5–7 p.m. Then relax
with reading and television. I have proactively prepared my schedule for
the week and or day. I'll post on Social Media in the evening or morning.
We read before we sleep and lights out by 10:30-11 p.m.

Due to confidentiality, when someone shares something brilliant, I can't 'just tweet it'! I remember feeling frustrated so much leadership wisdom was confined to these conversations.   • 5. QUESTION 1 WHAT HAVE YOU FOUND MOST CHALLENGING AS A LEADER? Administration, record, and bookkeeping. This task is tedious. 05 7 QUESTIONS ON LEADERSHIP WITH WILLIAM H. BENDER QUESTION 2 HOW DID YOU BECOME A LEADER? CAN YOU PLEASE BRIEFLY TELL THE STORY? I was taught as a young teen to take pride in my work and do it correctly. I was athletic and competitive. I applied (entry-level - busser/dishwasher) and was hired by Steak and Ale Restaurants at a soon-to-open unit in Rockville, Maryland. I worked hard and fast and did the job right. I was recognized quickly by the Managers and Corporate level leaders. S&A was a fast-growing brand with excellent leadership and support. They modeled good leadership and communication and were willing to share and teach us. They asked me to train new employees. I was given promotions with increased responsibilities and was soon a kitchen manager at this high-volume unit. I joined the company when it had 18 restaurants, growing to over 400 restaurants during the next few years. The people I worked with created a network of opportunities throughout my career.
  • 6. 06 My wife and I are early risers, 4:30 - 5 a.m. We start the day with Hot Tea and newspapers, including the WSJ. I then go to my athletic club for exercise. I'm usually at the office by 8 a.m. I have my calendar and calls or appointments scheduled. I have already prepared my daily tasks of work that needs completing. The coffee pot is a necessity. Depending on the workflow, there is time for reading, research, or marketing during the day. I work with clients off- site and on-site, and that requires travel for projects that are out of town. I stay current on my restaurant and food service clients/industry via trade publications and websites. We have an early dinner, 5–7 p.m. Then relax with reading and television. I have proactively prepared my schedule for the week and or day. I'll post on Social Media in the evening or morning. We read before we sleep and lights out by 10:30-11 p.m. QUESTION 3 HOW DO YOU STRUCTURE YOUR WORK DAYS FROM WAKING UP TO GOING TO SLEEP? 7 QUESTIONS ON LEADERSHIP WITH WILLIAM H. Stay observant when working with your team members. Recognize good performance. Some people are shy and never receive compliments or any attention. By dedicating a few non-threatening moments of conversation that are not work-related, you will learn and discover more about them. This may start a positive relationship and good work experience for them. LeBrandon Hickey was a ProStart Student I met in Chicago at the National Restaurant Show. I gave him a copy of the One Minute Manager. He read and understood the principles of the OMM. He has prospered. We are still friends and have stayed connected for almost 20 years.
