6.3 docx

  1. 1. 6.3     The  objective  of  this  documentary  is  to  evaluate  how  I  managed  the  production   process  of  my  documentary.     Overall  I  am  happy  with  my  final  documentary.  I  think  I  managed  to  film  a  lot  of   usable  and  relevant  footage  for  both  cutaways  and  for  interviews.  I  managed  to   meet  up  with  the  prominent  figure  in  my  documentary  (  Nathan)  more  times   than  I  thought  at  first    I  would  be  able  to  which  gave  me  the  opportunity  to   improve  the  quality  of  my  footage  as  I  was  able  to  review  what  I  had  already   filmed  and  decided  how  I  could  improve  it.  I  also  managed  to  use  a  lot  of   different  locations  during  filming  for  both  cutaways  and  for  interviews  e.g.  when   myself  and  Nathan  took  Lily  swimming  and  to  the  park  we  got  some  footage  of   the  trip  and  of  Nathan  playing  with  Lily  in  the  park.       I  was  also  pleased  that  Nathans  brother  agreed  to  be  filmed  and  gave  an   interview,  which  gave  the  documentary  more  variation  and  made  the   documentary  a  bit  more  objective.     I  think  that  the  use  of  Vlogs  throughout  the  documentary  was  also  a  good  choice   as  it  gave  Nathan  the  chance  to  give  frequent  updates  about  what  had  been   happening  with  his  life  and  with  his  partners  pregnancy  without  having  to  wait   until  the  next  time  we  would  meet  and  film.         Another  aspect  of  the  production  that  I  felt  went  well  was  that  Nathan  was  very   eager  to  be  filmed  and  was  flexible  with  the  times  he  could  come  and  film  with   me,  because  of  this  we  managed  to  take  Lily  out  twice  which  helped  gain  more
  2. 2. footage  and  as  this  was  a  large  part  of  the  documentary  it  helped  improve  the   overall  quality  of  the  documentary.     One  of  the  main  issues  I  had  when  producing  this  documentary  was  time   management.  I  didn’t  always  manage  to  stick  to  the  production  schedule  when   filming  and  I  didn’t  leave  myself  enough  time  to  edit,  because  of  this  I  didn’t   manage  to  meet  the  deadline  for  the  task.     A  good  example  of  when  I  used  time  management  effectively  was  when  I   arranged  a  day  shoot  with  Nathan,  Lily  and  myself.    This  was  challenging  because   I  had  to  find  a  time  when  Lily  was  free  (and  her  mum  to  supervise),  when  I  was   free  and  had  access  to  equipment  needed  and  when  Nathan  was  free.  We  ended   up  doing  a  day  shoot  twice,  this  was  challenging  because  Nathan  is  currently   studying  at  college  and  has  a  lot  of  course  work  to  do  leaving  him  with  very  little   free  time,  he  then  also  has  other  responsibilities  as  stated  in  the  documentary  as   he  has  to  support  his  pregnant  girlfriend.  I  am  also  very  busy,  at  the  time  of   filming  I  was  working  on  both  Saturday  and  Sunday  and  also  going  to  college  5   days  a  week,  this  left  no  days  in  the  week  for  a  full  day  shoot,  on  top  of  that   Robyn  (Lily’s  mum)  and  Lily  were  also  busy  sometimes,  so  to  organise  a  day   shoot  was  very  tricky.  The  first  thing  I  had  to  do  was  to  find  out  which  days  I   could  have  off  of  work  and  then  organise  around  that,  I  would  make  Nathan  and   Robyn  aware  of  what  days  I  was  available  and  then  between  the  thee  of  us  we   would  decide  which  day  was  best  for  everybody.  Once  we  had  decided  on  a  day  I   would  have  to  let  them  know  what  activities  I  was  planning  on  doing  with  them   e.g.  swimming  (they  would  need  their  swimming  kit)  and  what  time  I  had  hoped
  3. 3. to  finish  filming.  This  was  a  long  process  and  had  to  be  organised  about  2-‐3   weeks  in  advance  so  that  everybody  was  available  and  I  had  to  make  sure   equipment  was  available.     Although  there  were  a  lot  of  times  where  I  showed  effective  time  management,   there  were  also  times  where  I  showed  aspects  of  poor  time  management.  I  spent   most  of  my  production  time  filming  with  either  Nathan  or  Lily,  because  of  this  I   left  very  little  time  to  edit  the  documentary  as  I  had  underestimated  how  long  it   would  take.  I  had  left  myself  two  days  (  four  hours  of  school  lessons)  and  about  8   hours  of  after  school  time  to  edit  my  work.  However,  I  had  issues  with  the   technology  as  rendering  took  a  very  long  time  and  also  I  didn’t  manage  to  make   it  to  one  of  the  sessions,  therefore  I  had  even  less  time  then  planned  and   struggled  to  edit  in  this  time.  At  the  end  of  these  sessions  I  was  only  about  half   way  through  editing  and  therefore  had  missed  the  deadline.  After  the  deadline  I   spent  another  two  days  editing  before  finally  completing  and  presenting  my   documentary.  I  was  the  last  to  present  in  my  class  and  this  has  lowed  my  overall   grade.  I  also  didn’t  use  all  of  the  time  I  could  have  during  the  production  process   to  edit,  I  waited  until  I  had  everything  filmed  before  I  started  to  edit  when  I  could     have  edited  each  interview  after  I  had  filmed  it  to  make  split  up  the  time  better   and  left  less  to  do  at  the  end.     If  I  had  to  organise  the  production  process  again  I  would  have  spent  more  time  in   lessons  and  after  school  editing  my  work  as  I  went  a  long  instead  of  waiting  until   the  end,  I  think  if  I  had  done  this  I  would  have  met  the  deadline.
  4. 4. The  majority  of  my  documentary  was  not  filmed  in  the  order  shown  in  the   documentary.    The  main  part  of  my  documentary  that  is  in  order  is  the  Vlogs   shown.  Nathan  sent  me  Vlogs  on  weekly  basis  and  I  chose  the  best  ones  and  cut   them  to  fit  into  the  documentary.  Only  two  Vlogs  are  shown  throughout  because   of  how  short  the  documentary  had  to  be  (  5  minutes  long)  and  I  felt  there  were   other  things  that  were  better  use  of  the  time,  however  he  sent  me  many  more.
