Common things people do that they shouldn't — Kelly Freeman

  1. 1. No-no: common things people do that they shouldn’t @kellya_freeman @intranetexperts
  2. 2. Treating it like an event, not a process BUILD THE INTRANETLEARN MEASURE Develop a vision and strategy Anchor new approaches Generate short-term wins Consolidate gains START FINISH @kellya_freeman @intranetexperts

  5. 5. Expecting magic Intranet ≠ employee engagement intranet = tools engagement = (strategy + leadership) x (tools + resources) x (time + patience) benchmarking + measurement (I hope these symbols make sense, rubbish at maths) @kellya_freeman @intranetexperts

  7. 7. Over-governing users – be less Monica Geller – rules are not fun @kellya_freeman @intranetexperts A common concern from stakeholders is “what if” What if someone says something bad What if people ‘waste time’ What if what if This forces intranet managers to over-govern, creating so many rules and regulations about what’s acceptable, what’s not, what to do and what not to do Users become over cautious and do nothing Fostering open working on your intranet requires a leap of faith in some respects, to allow openness and to embrace what comes out of it. You cannot control everything and shouldn’t try to. If you need a policy, your existing employee conduct policy should be more than enough Better is to reframe as things to do, rather than what not to do
  8. 8. Under-governing everyone else – be less Tyler Durden – “the rules are there are no rules” @kellya_freeman @intranetexperts It is often the same stakeholders that want to over regulate users who seem to abdicate their accountability when it comes to content strategy and management. Content management remains one of the major issues facing intranet management. Keeping content current, keeping it useful, keeping it findable – it is a challenge For small intranet management teams or single practitioners, it will always be necessary to operate some form of decentralised publishing Creating accountability and responsibility across the organisation is key – intranet management is plural One person cannot do the job of many Those creating the content and those in stakeholder positions have a role to play
  9. 9. Not creating content for web usability @kellya_freeman @intranetexperts Bite • A headline with a message Snack •A concise summary that conveys enough for a comprehensive overview Meal •The full content Urgh! Who has time for all this?
  10. 10. Not creating content for web usability @kellya_freeman @intranetexperts Bite • A headline with a message Snack •A concise summary that conveys enough for a comprehensive overview Meal •The full content
  11. 11. • Think long term: it should begin before you build and continue to iterate over time • Start where you can #cakeiscake • It is not a rabbit out of a hat and won’t fix everything…… • …..because the intranet is just one tool in your employee engagement toolkit • Be less Monica: rules do not control the fun, they stifle openness • Be less Tyler: rules help you stay focussed and content stay relevant • Have a bite, have a snack and only meal if you must: users don’t have time to read • Death to PDF! Lightning summary – wrap it up, quick! @kellya_freeman @intranetexperts
