  2. 2. Anand Karaj Ceremony Of Sikh Wedding Though Sikhs are regarded as having their origin from Hindus, but now they are separate entities. They have developed many rituals and customs (since centuries) that are quite different from the Hindus. The marriage is not the exception. Various Sikh Gurus have developed shabad that are recited at the time of marriage which are similar to that of slokas in Hindu marriages. It is matter to note the Sikh marriage is also a holy union of two souls and it is performed before the holy book “Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji”.   3. 3. Page 2 of 7 in front of sacred fire. The most sacred ritual of Sikh wedding is the Anand Karaj. It binds the groom and bride in one unit and they become one for the rest of life. The most sacred ritual is performed in the presence of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. If is believed that the first copule to be wedded with the Anand karaj were the Guru Arjun Dev and Mata Ganga. There happens the ritual of milni (informal family meeting) and the barat party proceeds to the Darbar Sahib. Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji is already enthroned there. The next step is of Lavan. The lavan is the heart of the Anand Karaj. While the couple make rounds or circles around Guru, the shabad is recited. It makes the marriage and union in deep context of the god. Then brides becomes fully to the groom. The lavan is the union of souls. The next shabad expresses joy of bride for acquiring her life partner. The ceremony ends with offering of ardas and sangat. It is meant for blessing of all present there for the couple.
