9. Introduction: Refugee Influx
Uganda is experiencing a
displacement shock
❑ Third highest refugee host country in
2020
❑ Refugee population more to over
1.4million
❑ Instability and conflict in neighboring
countries
❑ 75% South Sudan origin

10. Nakivale Refugee Settlement
Background
▪ Nakivale refugee settlement -
located in Isingiro District in
Southwest Uganda. One of the
oldest settlements in the country.
▪ Currently hosts 119,587 refugees
from the Democratic Republic of
Congo, Burundi, Somalia,

▪ Land is one of the main issues
refugees face when utilizing the
ones near the host community.

The Power of Local
11. Why map the vulnerable communities?
For:
⮚ decentralising natural disasters and complex emergencies,
⮚ access to high-quality, timely information
⮚ critical precondition for effective aid delivery.
⮚ respond adequately to crisis
⮚ cover data gaps that emerge due to continuous influx
⮚ Use geo data for decision making and action plan for
development
⮚ Minimise disasters and risks
The Power of Local
12. Problem Statement & Risks
EDUCATION
• Crime
• Unwanted pregnacies, prostitition
• Drug and Alcohol abuse
EDUCATION
• Crime-Unwanted pregnancies-prostitution
• Drug and Alcohol abuse
SECURITY
*Attacks from wildlife *Conflict between ethnic groups * Fire outbreaks and Floods
AGRICULTURE
• Food security *Poor agro economic practices * High dependence on handout
WATER & SANITATION
• Disease outbreaks- water contamination
• Poor garbage disposal , landfill capacity been exceeded
• Long waits for domestic and construction water
HEALTH
*Shortage of critical medical services *High mortality rate* COVID 19 pandemic
13. Why Map Nakivale Refugee
Settlement
Main Objective
⮚ Map the existing settlements
⮚ Planning for future
⮚ Infrastructure projects
⮚ Expansion of the school
⮚ Create more reception centres.
The Power of Local
14. Beyond Objectives of using drones
⮚ Identify types of roads
⮚ Standard of medical facilities
⮚ Identify landfills
⮚ Water point
⮚ Reception areas
⮚ Free land for relocating refugees
⮚ Making relation studies on resource against population in
villages
⮚ Respond to COVID 19
The Power of Local
15. Scope
• The mapping exercise was
for three days and two days
of community engagement.
• 12 different grounds were
mapped – (Base Camp, Base
Camp Offices, Buja, Juru,
Kabahinda, Kabazana
Reception Centre, Kahirimbi,
the Market, New Congo, the
Library, Rubondo Secondary
School, Keibale and New
Rubondo Settlement).

18. Contours & DSM
❑ Learn about the shape of
the land
❑ Few contour lines show
flat areas and many
contour lines show hilly or
mountainous areas.
.
The Power of Local
19. Contours & DSM Cont’d
▪ From the orthomosaics Maps
▪ From Orthomosaics Land use
Land cover change
▪ Contours used in
infrastructural Planning
▪ DSM was used risk analysis
within the settlements.

20. Solutions
⮚ Relocate some of the population and decongest villages to avoid spread of
COVID-19
⮚ Markets congestion- education on social distance and other SOPs are
been implemented
⮚ Extra water portable points have been installed for handwashing
⮚ Expansion of reception areas
⮚ Construction for schools underway
⮚ COVID-19 response
The Power of Local
21. FUTURE PLANS
⮚ Intensify on STEM projects
⮚ Health Robotics
⮚ Collaborate with Universities on projects and
innovations
⮚ Expand training contents in piloting
⮚ Partner with more developers
