Mobile for business

The majority of people in the UK now own a smartphone. The concept of 'Bringing Your Own Device' opens up many opportunities for businesses and institutions to improve effectiveness by taking advantage of mobile computing, while reducing costs.

Waterstons' Ross Dargan & Charlie Hales look at how BYOD can be leveraged to add real business value. They also offer some solutions to the problems that BYOD opens up, such as coping with the fragmentation of mobile platforms, device and app management and the importance of contextually-aware user interface design.

    21. 21. Targeting Options What's involved in targeting all these devices?
    22. 22. UI Considerations
    23. 23. Native Development Android Java Eclipse IntelliJ Windows Phone C#/Visual Basic/F# Visual Studio iOS Objective C Xcode
    24. 24. Native Development Pros • Very Fast • Access to all platform apis • Gets into the app stores • Supports push notifications Cons • In depth knowledge required for each platform • No code re-use (Expensive)
    25. 25. Responsive/Mobile Website Pros • As universal as it gets (so can be cheaper) • Can access motion sensors • Can have some offline capabilities Cons • Won’t get in the store • Cant do push notifications • Must be aware of limited connectivity • Cant do any background work • Can’t access camera*, NFC or other senors • Hard to make look native
    26. 26. Hybrid Applications aka PhoneGap/Cordova Pros • Supports a lot of platforms • Supports most sensors • Can get in the app store • Supports push notifications Cons • Very slow on most platforms • Expect to spend a lot of time on optimisation • Never looks truly native (often doesn’t even try) • Very high abstractions
    27. 27. Cross Compilation AKA Xamarin Pros • Totally native experience to end use • All the benefits of native application • Fix code in a “core” library and it’s fixed on every platform Cons • You still need to know how to do native development • Additional licensing costs • Very Low level abstractions
    28. 28. Issues DATA PROTECTION
    29. 29. What is Mobile Device Management? • Secures, monitors, manages and supports mobile devices of multiple operating systems, service providers and enterprises • Enabler for users to access internal systems securely from any device and anywhere • Enables BYOD
    30. 30. BYOD Business Survey Do not support BYOD 10% 10% Fully embrace and support 12% Trialing BYOD 18% Embrace, but user self support 39% Limited BYOD Strategy 21% Source: zkresearch.com
    31. 31. What can MDM do for business? • Save money – Reduce hardware costs through BYOD – Enable Flexible working and empower users • Users more productive • Reduces risk – Where is your data? – Consider this also for existing laptops
    32. 32. Defining the right MDM solution • What do you want to manage on the device? – – – – – – – – – – Types of devices PIN Remote Wipe/Selective Wipe Data Apps Device/App Encryption Integration with enterprise applications Multi user profiles Separation of personal and work data Internet access
    33. 33. Lots of solutions available • • • • • Dependant on requirements Leverage what you already have if possible Exchange Active Sync SCCM with Intune Other MDM providers – SaaS or on-premise – Some examples. Good Technology, Citrix, MobileIron
    34. 34. Issues HEALTH AND SAFETY
    35. 35. Devices
