UNIT 57: PHOTOGRAPHY AND PHOTOGRAPHIC PRACTISE PROJECT PROPOSAL (P2, P3, M2, M3) Candidate name: Cesca Haig
We will be going to Salford Quays onNovember 19th to take pictures of theurban landscape around the area. I willbe producing about 35-40 pictures of thebuildings and sights around SalfordQuays, from these I will pick my final 10images.
REASONS FOR SELECTION OF THEME (INCLUDING INSPIRATION FROM THE WORK OF OTHERS)I am taking these images because I want to capture all thedifferent textures of the urban landscape, for example the waterand reflections from the buildings around in it. Also the all theinteresting buildings around Salford Quays, because they’re not allthe typical straight up, straight down build. My theme will be black and white photography as I think thatcaptures the eye of the viewer, as it makes them pay moreattention to the details of the things in the image.
Two photographers whose work I have been inspired by are Ansel Adams andEugène Atget, they both worked with black and white photography and bothwere landscape photographers. Although Ansel Adams worked a lot with rurallandscape I can still use his work as inspiration with the way he uses water in hisimages to show the reflection of the things he is photographing. Eugene Atgethas also worked in this way, but he used more buildings and was a more urbanlandscape photographer. His work is based around the streets of Paris, he didn’tuse many techniques but instead used the textures of the things he wasphotographing, which is what I am hoping to do with my work.
A third photographer I am using as inspiration is Iain Hutchinson, he ismore modern urban landscape photographer although he still worksin black and white.I have put a few examples of his work here to show the way he usesdifferent techniques, as with the other two photographers I have usedhe has used the reflection from the water in his one of his images.
In my work I will use different techniques, such as depth of field, rule of thirds andMacro.I want to use depth of field in my photography because I like the way that itmakes the viewer have to focus more on the photo to try and see what is out offocus either in the background or at the foreground.I think that using rule of thirds will make my compositions more interesting, I willmake my view lines more off center and consider skylines in my photography tomake my images more dramatic. As I have decided that I want to use the textures of the buildings and surfacesaround Salford Quays I will use macro photography to capture close ups ofdifferent surfaces, as this will enable me to show the smaller details better.
We will be visiting Salford Quays onthe November 19th 9.30-12.30Salford Quays is GreaterManchester’s unique waterfrontdestination.
