The Xitsonga Music App by Digital Tsonga Productions was officially released on 8 February
2019. Development on the mobile app began in late 2016 and further went under the brand
name of the “DigitalTsonga Mobile” which included everything in one development package;
however in December 2018 the project was restructured and divided into two separate
development projects which are now encompassed by (1) the Xitsonga Music App, and (2) the
Tsonga Learning Guide, each released separately.
Xitsonga Mobile App is an innovative new app that brings local Xitsonga traditional music to the
world stage and commercializes active musicians to reach their fans through broadcast,
publication, and merchandise sales. By using the Xitsonga Music App, local musicians are able to
distribute and sell their music in digital form and the app makes it particularly easy for people
located in the most rural of places to get access to their favourite music.
Development on the app was started by Vonakani Maluleke, who is the founder and executive
director of the Digital Tsonga Productions Company, and is the lead developer of subsequent
digital products under the brand name. The Xitsonga Music App is a new project which is
currently under active development and is updated regularly every two months to improve on
bugs, user interface, and app features.
