Characteristics of Sodium Hypochlorite • Sodium hypochlorite is a strong oxidizer and corrosive, it can be very destructive to buildings & contents. • Sodium hypochlorite can produce highly toxic gases when exposed to organic materials when combined with sulfactiants. concentrations rose 8-52 times for Chloroform, and 1-1170 times for Carbon Tetrachloride. 26

Personal Protective Equipment: Typical One Piece Protective Suite • • Microscopic particles are restricted by the fabric of the protective suite. • Suits come in chemical resistant or more “breathable” fabrics. • This full coverage suit comes with elastic wrists, boots, hood, and zipper front. 31

  29. 29. Personal Protective Equipment: Typical N95 Protective Masks • The “disposable” particulate respirator shown is a Type N95. This particular mask has an “exhalation valve”. • The 3M N95 respirator does not have an exhalation valve and is a very basic and economically priced respirator. 34

Personal Protective Equipment: Typical Half Face Protective Masks • Half face respirators offer the advantage of being able to utilize a wide range of replaceable filters. • Half face masks can be more comfortable than disposable masks. • Half face masks generally provide a better seal around the facial area than disposable masks. 35

Hotel & Resort Litigation • On May 16, 2002 a class action law suite was filed representing an estimated 10,000 persons. • The complaint alleged that the plaintiff and his family were injured after spending 17 days at the resort by the hotels “unfair and deceptive acts and practices by nondisclosure of mold growth in the guest rooms after the hotel was aware of the problem”. 54

Mobile Home Litigation • • In 2004, A 7.5 million dollar lawsuit was filed seeking “wrongful death” damages as a result of alleged exposure to mold to the estate of a 60 year old grandmother and her 2 year old grandson. • The grandmother died in 2001, the pathologist report indicated that the cause of death was • due to a overwhelming • fungal infestation in • her lungs. 55

Mycotoxins & Toxic Mold • The term "toxic mold" refers to molds that produce mycotoxins such as Stachybotrys chartarum, Alternaria, Aspergillus , Penicillium, and others. • Not all molds produce mycotoxins. • Molds that produce mycotoxins can pose serious health risks to humans and animals. 56
  52. 52. High Ozone Shock Treatment • Involves using an ozone generator to create lethal levels of ozone in an odor ridden room or building. It is not approved or recommended for mold remediation. • It provides a fast adjunct method of unpleasant odor removal. • The use of ozone is controversial and if used inappropriately it can have serious adverse effects on people, pets & property. 57

What Are Surfactants ? • Surfactants are compounds that lower the surface or interfacial tension of a liquid between two liquids, or between a liquid and a solid. • Surfactants may act as detergents, wetting agents, emulsifiers, foaming agents, and dispersants • Surfactants are sometimes utilized by manufactures to assist liquids penetrate into porous surfaces, or to increase cleaning efficiency. 62

  61. 61. King Tut and “Curse Of The Mummy” … Did Death visit those who disturbed the mummy ? • In 1922 King Tutankhamen's w tomb was discovered. A British archeological sponsor - Lord Carnarvon after attending the tombs opening died shortly afterwards inspiring supernatural “curse” speculation. • In recent years a scientific mummy's-curse theory was offered for Carnarvon's death. Was he killed by exposure to ancient, toxic pathogens from the sealed tomb? • Some ancient mummies do carry mold, including at least two potentially dangerous species—Aspergillus niger and Aspergillus flavus. • Some tomb walls may also be covered with respiratory- assaulting bacteria like Pseudomonas and Staphylococcus. • Bats inhabit many excavated tombs, and their droppings carry a fungus that can cause the influenza-like respiratory disease histoplasmosis. Under the right conditions such hazards could prove deadly. 66
  62. 62. Recommendations…. • If you suspect mold or mildew; or detect an unpleasant “musty” odor, there is usually excessive moisture, humidity or water present. Test the area. • Discovering the cause of, and remediating the source of the excessive moisture is essential to prevent a reoccurrence of mold. • Properly using the correct types of PPE is essential to safeguard your health. When in doubt, always proceed on the side of caution by making possibly dangerous situations non-issues. • Have resources “In Place” in Advance of a potential need. Conversely, developing a plan and searching for resources while under duress is far more stressful strategy that typically results in higher costs and longer recovery times. 67
