What questions are we being asked? ... and how do we answer them?

  1. 1. what questions are we being asked? • ‘are these the same people?’ = non-specific • what constitutes evidence/propositions? • different ‘users’ – nature of the question can change … and how do we answer them? • LR approach advocated by UK G’ment FSR • But… court issues with numerical LR (R v T [2010])/ framework dictates to methodology • verbal LR – support statement - best (??) solution in practice (if not ideal solution in theory) • typicality: experience, expertise, descriptive literature, limited empirical data • ways forward: • being explicit about propositions and assumptions • communicating to users that evidence is conditional on assumptions • data sharing (of all kinds; crowd sourcing knowledge) • Validation of method = crucial Vincent Hughes vincent.hughes@york.ac.uk
