  5. 5. Consolidation BasicsSimply stated, financial consolidation means regrouping financial data for a companys segmentsand subsidiaries into a unified set of accounting records – as if these records were the financialstatements of a single company. For example, if a U.S.-based multinational operates in 50 countries and has 20 subsidiaries in various parts of the world, financial consolidation requires adding up financial data for all 20 subsidiaries and presenting a single set of corporate financial statements. 6. 6. Consolidation BasicsFinancial statement consolidation serves three purposes:1. They help regulators review all decisions that a companys top management makes and ensures that these decisions comply with regulations and industry practices. For example, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) may review the activities of a USA-based company in Venezuela.2. Second, it allows investors to gauge a firms market share, competitive standing and business performance.3. Third, it helps a companys top leadership evaluate the economic health of the company and identify nonperforming areas, countries or segments.© 2011 SAP AG. All rights reserved. 6
