We can modify how these rollover tooltips appear from the Options window. You can
right-click anywhere in the graphic area, and select Options. Go to the Display tab. Under
Color Scheme, check the boxes about showing the tooltips and showing the shortcut keys
in the tooltips, as well as the extended tooltips and the number of seconds delay before
the extended tool tip flies out.

AutoCAD Tutorials for Beginners: Quick Properties

  1. 1. AutoCAD Tutorials for Beginners: Quick Properties Welcome back to our series of AutoCAD tutorials for beginners. In this article, we’ll learn about working with Quick Properties in AutoCAD. We learned in a previous lesson that when we hover the mouse over a tool, a tooltip appears; well, when we hover the mouse over an object in the drawing area, a window appears that lists the various properties of whatever object we’ve got the mouse over. This is called a Rollover ToolTip; it auto-collapses when I mouse away. We can modify how these rollover tooltips appear from the Options window. You can right-click anywhere in the graphic area, and select Options. Go to the Display tab. Under Color Scheme, check the boxes about showing the tooltips and showing the shortcut keys in the tooltips, as well as the extended tooltips and the number of seconds delay before the extended tool tip flies out. When you select an object in the graphic area, and right-click, you’ll see two options for Properties and Quick Properties. First let’s take a quick peek at the properties option. A window appears displaying a detailed list of properties of the selected object—this is the properties palette - we’ll be looking at this in a subsequent lesson. For now, let’s take a look at the Quick Properties option. The quick properties palette appears, and it’s obviously less detailed than the Properties palette.
  2. 2. Here we can access these properties and make real-time modifications. Let’s change the color to red and adjust the coordinates of the centre of the circle. We’ll decrease the radius a bit. Now let’s launch the Customize dialog window. From here we can modify the Quick Properties display, as well as the Rollover tips. Let’s select Quick Properties. And from the column in the middle we select the object type. I’ll select circle, because that’s what I’m working with. From the column on the right, I’ll check the properties that I want displayed in the quick properties palette. The same goes for the rollover tool tips—let’s select the object, CIRCLE, and on the right we’ll check the properties we want displayed in the rollover tool tip. If I RC on the rollover tool tips, I can select Synchronize with Quick Properties to have them match. Here we choose the direction of synch—we can apply the rollover tips to the Quick Properties settings or vice versa. Let’s choose the second option. To edit the object type list, click the customize button in the upper right hand corner. Here we can select additional object types. Click ok. Then click OK again to exit the window. Now when I mouse over the circle, additional properties display in the rollover tool tip. Let’s select the circle and select Quick Properties. As you see, the additional properties are now available in the Quick Properties panel. Let’s click the options icon and go to Settings. Go to the Quick Properties tab. From this tab we control the functionality and appearance of the Quick Properties panel. And let’s select the collapse palette automatically options. Click ok and select the circle. RC, Quick Properties. Now the panel auto collapses; to expand, just mouse over the panel. Let’s close it. Now, let’s go to Tools, and then select Drafting Settings. Uncheck the box “Collapse palette automatically” and click ok. When we select the circle again, then right click and
  3. 3. select Quick Properties, we can change the color, but only the circle is available from the drop down menu on the top of the window. If you try to select the line at the same time. Then, right click and select Quick Properties. Now we see a list of properties that both objects share. Or we can select which object to modify individually. Let’s change the color to red. This concludes our article about Quick Properties in this AutoCAD tutorial for beginner’s series.
