2. Sexual Assault Scandal
In 2014 Tevin Elliott was convicted of two accounts of sexual assault against fellow
student athlete. Four women stepped forward stating they had also been attacked
by the former linebacker.
Since the case many rape victims claim they were unable to receive support from
the school after their own assaults. Parents contacted the university and coaches
several times with no reply.
Jasmine Hernandez, one of Elliot’s victims, has filed a Title IX lawsuit against Baylor
University accusing the school of ignoring sexual violence perpetrated by its star
athletes.
Title IX is a law designed to protect sexual assault victims from discrimination in
education.
3. History of Negligence
Hernandez claims Baylor’s neglected to provide counseling or academic assistance
which resulted in Hernandez having to withdraw from the University.
On June 15th another lawsuit was filed, where the victims say they were dissuaded
from reporting their attacks by school officials.
Both lawsuits state Baylor failed to investigate rape allegations, provide protection
or academic support to the victims. Hernandez named head coach Art Briles as
being aware of Elliott’s transgressions and not taking proper action against Elliott.
In reaction to the scandal, coach Briles has been fired and Ken Starr replaced by
David Garland as school president.
Garland has since apologized for how the school handled sexual assault cases.
