We believe young people should create,
not inherit the future.
Vibewire is the launchpad for young
changemakers.

4. Background
Vibewire in partnership with NCOSS, Jewish House, Minerva Collective and MnM
Institute hosted #Hack4MentalHealth on 16-18 February 2018.
Over 100 people participated in the hackathon including, coders, designers,
entrepreneurs and subject matter experts from Jewish House, NCOSS, Fresh
Gravity and Dan Hunt from the Mental Health Movement. As well as people with
lived experience of mental health (past and recent).
More than 50% of participants had never been to a hackathon before - and only a
small number of people had previously met. We were all swimming in uncharted
waters.
Over 36 hours, eleven teams formed and developed solutions that addressed the
key themes and problem statements.

5. Themes
The themes include:
● Depression and mental
health
● Anxiety
● Death by suicide
● Peer-to-peer support
● Positive choice,
storytelling and
wellbeing.

6. Despite billions of dollars of investment and long term commitment to addressing mental health issues, statistics indicate
that the situation is worsening.
Youth mental health:
● Around one in 35 young Australians aged 4-17 experience a depressive disorder
● One in seven young Australians experience a mental health condition
● Suicide is the biggest killer of young Australians and accounts for the deaths of more young people than car
accidents
Moreover:
● The number of deaths by suicide in young Australians is the highest it has been in 10 years – 391 young
Australians died by suicide in 2012 compared with 290 in 2005.

JEWISH HOUSE Challenge: ISOLATION AND LONELINESS/24/7 CARE -
How people with mental health challenges can keep busy and have ways to feel
connected.
NCOSS Challenge: RURAL, REGIONAL, REMOTE ACCESS TO SERVICES -
Connectivity for people in rural and remote areas dealing with Mental Health
issues.
