How does your ITPfM process rank?
Information Technology Portfolio Management

(ITPfM) is the process through which your

organization can optimize its “return” on IT

spending.
Maturity Model Explained
Provides a high level understanding of how
strong your current process against best
practices.

The maturity model can help management understand where shortcomings
exist and set targets for where they need to be. Maturity ranges from 0 to 5
per industry standards.
Maturity Level – 0. Non-Existent
 No awareness that IT investments should be managed
     collectively
  No process documentation
 No defined roles and responsibilities

Non-Existent Ad-Hoc Intuitive Defined Managed Optimized

     0 1 2 3 4 5
Maturity Level – 1. Ad-Hoc
 Some business functions apply portfolio management
     principles
 Selection of investments is largely subjective and political
  No process documentation
 No defined roles and responsibilities

Non-Existent Ad-Hoc Intuitive Defined Managed Optimized

     0 1 2 3 4 5
Maturity Level – 2. Intuitive
 Business justification documents are available for most
     investments
 Increasing awareness of the need to manage IT investments
     collectively
  No process documentation
 Limited defined roles and responsibilities

Non-Existent Ad-Hoc Intuitive Defined Managed Optimized

     0 1 2 3 4 5
Maturity Level – 3. Defined
 Business justification documents are available for all
     investments
 Process documentation exists but is not consistently applied
 There are defined roles and responsibilities
 Training plans not consistently executed

Non-Existent Ad-Hoc Intuitive Defined Managed Optimized

     0 1 2 3 4 5
Maturity Level – 4. Managed
 Board and executive management are fully committed to
     portfolio management
 Portfolio performance is regularly reviewed
 Advanced expertise available throughout the organization
 Training plans are available and consistently executed

Non-Existent Ad-Hoc Intuitive Defined Managed Optimized

     0 1 2 3 4 5
Maturity Level – 5. Optimized
 ITPfM is part of the corporate culture
 Individual performance is aligned with portfolio performance
 Advanced portfolio decision making exists, including
     incorporation of “what-if” analyses
 Portfolio is continuously monitored and optimized

Non-Existent Ad-Hoc Intuitive Defined Managed Optimized

     0 1 2 3 4 5
Anecdotal evidence suggests that most
           organizations rank between a 2 and 3.

Non-Existent Ad-Hoc Intuitive Defined Managed Optimized

     0 1 2 3 4 5
