Yet again, the retail news over the last two weeks reminds us that while the economic environment is difficult, there are winners and losers in all markets. Nowhere is this more apparent than in sportswear, with the success of Sports Direct highlighting the fact that JJB Sports’ failure is one of mismanagement and cannot be explained away by the Internet or the economy. Elsewhere, Dunelm Mill’s focus on value across multiple price points has made it the market leader in homewares. The ruthlessness of the market reminds us that retailers cannot expect to survive if they do not remain relevant to their customers, but there is still plenty of room for those that do to thrive.
