▶In 2011, the National Institute of Standards and Technology
defined Cloud computing as
–“A model for enabling ubiquitous, convenient, on-demand
network access to a shared pool of configurable
computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage,
applications, & services) that can be rapidly provisioned
and released with minimal management effort or service
provider interaction.
▶This cloud model is composed of 5 essential characteristics, 3
service models, and 4 deployment models.”

▶All cloud resources are available over a network, to manage
and use without any need for direct physical access
▶The network is not necessarily part of the service.
▶In Principle, Cloud resources should be accessible from
anywhere but can be controlled by access policies
▶In addition to this, they should also have secure network
between their physical resources across various regions.

▶Allows consumers to expand or contract the resources they
use from the pool (provisioning and deprovisioning), often
completely automatically.
▶This allows customers to more closely match resource
consumption with demand
▶Rapid Elasticity should support scale up/down & scale in/out
▶Scale up / down: Increasing or decreasing capacity in current
set up. It is also called as vertical scaling
▶Scale In/out: Increase or decreasing capacity by adding /
removing resources in same location or in a new region or
geography. It is also called horizontal scaling

▶Ensure that consumers only use the resources they are
allotted, and, if necessary, to charge them for it.
▶ This is also called utility computing as computing resources
are consumed like water and electricity, with the client only
paying for what they use
▶Unit of measure should be clearly defined in the management
plan and potential use cost should be displayed for a given
billing period

▶Cloud service provider abstracts the resources from the
underlying physical infrastructure to create resource pools.
▶Abstraction is enabled by virtualization.
▶They use orchestration and automation to coordinate carving
out and delivering a set of resources from the pools to the
consumers as needed

▶Cloud is multitenant by nature. Multiple different consumers
share the same pool of resources but are segregated and
isolated from each other.
▶Segregation allows the cloud provider to divide & share
resources to the different groups
▶Isolation ensures different consumers can’t see or modify
each other’s assets.
▶Multitenancy doesn’t only apply across different organizations
as it’s also used to divide & share resources between different
units within a single business or organization.
