By com- parison, the unemployment rate for the EU’s 27 member countries reached 10.9 percent. Unem- ployment rates in European countries have been driven up by the global economic crisis and the European debt crisis. In the worst-hit corners of Europe, such as Greece, the youth unemploy- ment rate exceeded 50 percent. DIFFICULT SITUATION IN THE LABOUR MARKET The situation is getting worse as the global re- covery weakens. Now over 6 million dispirited youths have given up their job search 2 . Extended unemployment entails higher risk of future unem- ployment, because prospective employers are leery of those who have been unemployed for a long time. It’s not easy to step out of this vicious circle, and youths are starting to feel useless and alienated from society. PART-TIME AND TEMPORARY JOBS This situation has forced young people to be less selective about the types of jobs and the terms they accept. As rising numbers of youths set- tle for part-time or temporary jobs, they begin to feel insecure about their future. Without relevant job experience they become less competitive in the job mar- ket and, in turn, miss oppor- tunities to increase their skills.   3. 3. Youth unemployment TRENDS Youth Unemployment Trends In Europe the unemployment rate for youths is 2.6 times higher than the unemployment rate for all ages 3 . In 2008 the rate was 0.6 times lower. The years since then have been harsh for youths, and to- day almost one in four Europeans aged 18-25 are unemployed. Mismatched qualifications Growing trends in the youth labour market include skills mismatch, over-education, and under-ed- ucation. Young workers who are over-skilled for their current jobs are capable of handling more complex tasks, and their skills are underused. Un- der-skilled workers lack the skills and experience necessary for their job, which is often a result of under-education. On the other hand, over-edu- cated youths are over-qualified for their jobs, so their job satisfaction level tends to be low. Male and female unemployment trends Recessions since 1980 have brought an interest- ing shift in unemployment rates for males versus females. Before the current recession, women were affected more than men. Since then, the gender gap has narrowed. At the end of 2012 the rates reached 10.7 % for men and 10.8 % for women.
