Vattenfall International Trainee Programme
As a trainee, you are employed on a fixed-term basis to fill
a standard position. You are trained over a 12 month period to

Operations and maintenance engineering
Examples of jobs:
Bid engineer – manages bid work and is responsible for bids
from a technical, quality and commercial point of view. Takes
part with customer account managers in negotiations, and is
the customer contact.
Control engineer – performs maintenance testing of relay
protection, as well as commissioning, configuration and testing
of control facilities, troubleshooting and relay adjustments,
remote controllers and other station equipment. Also carries
out design alterations in conjunction with commissioning.
Design engineer – works with design, testing, configuration
and commissioning of electrical and control systems that remote
control and monitor (relay protection, communication, remote
adjustment, AC and DC equipment) electrical and power plants
with the 0.4 – 400 kV voltage range.
Distribution technician – works with operation and
maintenance of our systems/district heating, cooling and
steam culverts and runs our own leakage projects. Works with
inspection, leakage searches, drawing checks and systems
design. Also draws up shut-down plans/orders for shutting.

Electrical engineer – work tasks vary depending on job
position and assignment but normally involve development,
construction, tests, operation and maintenance of
electrotechnical systems within various areas for instance
electrical power generation and distribution.
Electrical power engineer – handles the technology behind
electrical power systems and works with operation and
maintenance of different types of electrical plants. Works in
projects from start-up to completion, justifies sustainable
energy solutions based on a quality, energy and environmental
approach. The new energy solutions can involve, for instance,
wind power, Research & Development and Smart Grids.
Electrical quality engineer – as an electrical quality engineer,
your main tasks are to promote and manage issues relating to
electrical quality supplied to Eldistribution customers
Grid connection manager – in this role your main task is to
manage the process of identifying solutions to customer
connection issues, from enquiries to completed plant.
Maintenance engineer – responsible for planning and
implementing all operative maintenance and protective
measures, as well as developing and introducing modern and
efficient methods of operation.
Measurement engineer – works with electric power plants
from 0.4 to 400 kV. Reads circuit diagrams and understands
operating facilities and how they impact measurements.
Operating staff – works with implementing and testing
process and security systems, follow-up process functions and
development, as well as quality assurance work regarding
routines and operating instructions.
Optimisation manager – responsible for operational produc-
tion planning, based on a financial, environmental and supply
perspective to ensure plant resources are utilised in the best
way. Monitors currency trading, electricity certificates and
emission allowances based on current risk policy.
Planner – plans and implements projects relating to operations
within power distribution, i.e. both new build and maintenance
projects. The work includes identifying technical solutions,
performing grid calculations and cost calculations, liaising with
customers, landowners and authorities, ordering materials and
carrying out documentation and review processes.
Planning engineer – in this role you have a coordinating
function to technically and financially optimise plant assets in
terms of investments and maintenance.
Power grid analyst – carries out technical and cost planning
for power grids to ensure they have enough capacity and
optimal structure to meet customer supply needs and
regulatory authority requirements. Calculates and makes cost
estimates for rebuilding/new construction of power lines, for
instance.
Power system analyst – provides advanced technical
expertise within one or more specialist fields, as well as
setting requirements, driving and coordinating issues relating
to plant design, standardisation, technical guidelines and
future power grid technology.
Project manager – manages, plans, implements and follows up
projects from start-up to completion. In charge of budgets,
scheduling and resources, as well as acting as the company
contact with customers, suppliers and other stakeholders.
Project planner – this is an important role in ensuring that
electricity from Vattenfall's can be supplied to our customers.
Plans projects ranging from repair and maintenance work to
new installations, rebuilds and extensions.
Quality engineer – works with setting requirements, inspection
and verification of questions relating to mechanical
construction, materials and welding techniques, non-
destructive testing and choice of supplier. Also conducts
quality management/control in conjunction with procurement,
manufacturing, assembly, installation and document
management.
Research engineer – works with identifying new solutions,
efficiency enhancement and improvements for the
production and distribution of electricity and heating.
This also entails work within flow and structural mechanics,
combustion engineering and interdisciplinary technologies
using mathematical modelling, laboratory modelling or
measurement/analysis at plants.

Examples of jobs:
Analyst – works with risk and pricing issues in the electricity
market. Performs price forecasts and supports the trading
department when setting prices. The work focuses on the
relationship between prices, setting option prices and risk
models. The role requires knowledge of financial mathematics,
relating, for example, to option pricing and portfolio theory.
Meteorologist – working as a meteorologist at Vattenfall is an
exciting position that requires both technical and meteorologi-
cal knowhow when it comes to the weather, oceans, environ-
ment and climate. You examine, analyse and work with the aim
of identifying new technical energy solutions, for instance the
erection of wind farms and hydro power plants.
Process and safety engineer – analyses the entire energy
process, from uranium fuel issues to the generator that
generates electricity, as well as investigative assignments. Also
works with process and safety techniques, as well as

performing core physics calculations and probability calcula-
tions. The tasks require for instance knowledge of atomic and
nuclear physics, thermodynamics, automation and measure-
ment techniques, as well as calculation methods.

You have studied: Masters/Master of Science or Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical power, Mechanical and energy engineering or Operations and maintenance engineering Examples of jobs: Bid engineer – manages bid work and is responsible for bids from a technical, quality and commercial point of view. Takes part with customer account managers in negotiations, and is the customer contact. Control engineer – performs maintenance testing of relay protection, as well as commissioning, configuration and testing of control facilities, troubleshooting and relay adjustments, remote controllers and other station equipment. Also carries out design alterations in conjunction with commissioning. Design engineer – works with design, testing, configuration and commissioning of electrical and control systems that remote control and monitor (relay protection, communication, remote adjustment, AC and DC equipment) electrical and power plants with the 0.4 – 400 kV voltage range. Distribution technician – works with operation and maintenance of our systems/district heating, cooling and steam culverts and runs our own leakage projects. Electrical engineer – work tasks vary depending on job position and assignment but normally involve development, construction, tests, operation and maintenance of electrotechnical systems within various areas for instance electrical power generation and distribution. Electrical power engineer – handles the technology behind electrical power systems and works with operation and maintenance of different types of electrical plants. Works in projects from start-up to completion, justifies sustainable energy solutions based on a quality, energy and environmental approach. The new energy solutions can involve, for instance, wind power, Research & Development and Smart Grids. Electrical quality engineer – as an electrical quality engineer, your main tasks are to promote and manage issues relating to electrical quality supplied to Eldistribution customers Grid connection manager – in this role your main task is to manage the process of identifying solutions to customer connection issues, from enquiries to completed plant. Maintenance engineer – responsible for planning and implementing all operative maintenance and protective measures, as well as developing and introducing modern and efficient methods of operation. Measurement engineer – works with electric power plants from 0.4 to 400 kV. Reads circuit diagrams and understands operating facilities and how they impact measurements. Operating staff – works with implementing and testing process and security systems, follow-up process functions and development, as well as quality assurance work regarding routines and operating instructions. Optimisation manager – responsible for operational produc- tion planning, based on a financial, environmental and supply perspective to ensure plant resources are utilised in the best way. Monitors currency trading, electricity certificates and emission allowances based on current risk policy. Planner – plans and implements projects relating to operations within power distribution, i.e. both new build and maintenance projects. The work includes identifying technical solutions, performing grid calculations and cost calculations, liaising with customers, landowners and authorities, ordering materials and carrying out documentation and review processes. Planning engineer – in this role you have a coordinating function to technically and financially optimise plant assets in terms of investments and maintenance. Power grid analyst – carries out technical and cost planning for power grids to ensure they have enough capacity and optimal structure to meet customer supply needs and regulatory authority requirements. Calculates and makes cost estimates for rebuilding/new construction of power lines, for instance. Power system analyst – provides advanced technical expertise within one or more specialist fields, as well as setting requirements, driving and coordinating issues relating to plant design, standardisation, technical guidelines and future power grid technology. Project manager – manages, plans, implements and follows up projects from start-up to completion. In charge of budgets, scheduling and resources, as well as acting as the company contact with customers, suppliers and other stakeholders. Project planner – this is an important role in ensuring that electricity from Vattenfall's can be supplied to our customers. Plans projects ranging from repair and maintenance work to new installations, rebuilds and extensions. Quality engineer – works with setting requirements, inspection and verification of questions relating to mechanical construction, materials and welding techniques, non- destructive testing and choice of supplier. Also conducts quality management/control in conjunction with procurement, manufacturing, assembly, installation and document management. Performs price forecasts and supports the trading department when setting prices. The work focuses on the relationship between prices, setting option prices and risk models. The role requires knowledge of financial mathematics, relating, for example, to option pricing and portfolio theory. Meteorologist – working as a meteorologist at Vattenfall is an exciting position that requires both technical and meteorologi- cal knowhow when it comes to the weather, oceans, environ- ment and climate. You examine, analyse and work with the aim of identifying new technical energy solutions, for instance the erection of wind farms and hydro power plants. Process and safety engineer – analyses the entire energy process, from uranium fuel issues to the generator that generates electricity, as well as investigative assignments. You have studied: Master of Science in Built environment engineering/Land surveying/ Construction engineering Examples of jobs: Civil engineer – civil engineers work, for instance, both with hydro power and nuclear power. Within nuclear power, the civil engineer plans projects for new builds and renovations. Produces 2D and 3D drawings, carries out strength calculations for steel and concrete structures and conducts different types of investigations. Also draws up the technical elements in an inquiry and produces the design or construction concepts for new builds and renovations. Within hydro power, the civil engineer develops the work and planning of permit inspection of hydro power plants in terms of dam safety. Performs structural engineering inspections of the plants and attends dam safety evaluation meetings, drives construction and dam-related projects and investigations. Land surveyor – amongst other things, works with land valuations, legal issues related to property and grid conces- sions for power lines, applies for right of way easements and serves as a representative at land surveys. Also works with agreements (deeds, servitudes, usufruct agreements) and offers legal support to project managers on property issues. Project manager – manages, plans, implements and follows up projects, from start-up to completion. Reports sequence of events in the case of outages, drafts strategies for future operations and examines changes to maintenance programs and instructions. Analyst – works with risk and pricing issues in the electricity market. Performs price forecasts and supports the trading department when setting prices. The work focuses on the relationship between prices, price setting for options and risk models. The role requires knowledge of financial mathematics, relating, for example, to option pricing and portfolio theory. Business analyst – works with strategic issues to promote future growth in the company. Generates new business opportunities and analyses and evaluates energy market trends. Carries our forecasts for the energy market, develops and refines business and analysis models, cash-flow models and analysis tools and supports internal development proces- ses from initiatory pilot studies to commissioning and sales. Business developer – develops new products, from idea to finished concept. The role includes everything from designing a concept based on an idea to investigating internal and external conditions before a test launch.
