Minneapolis Hip-Hop and Social Media:A presentation by Av Mellen
A Brief History of Rhymesayers

Rhymesayers was founded in 1995 by Sean Daley (aka Slug), Anthony Davis(aka Ant), Brent Sayers (aka Stress) and MusabSaad(aka Sab).
In 1999 the label opened its own record store in Uptown Minneapolis called Fifth Element. The store has become a staple of hip hop in the Twin Cities, specializing in local music, but also selling independent and commercial hip hop.
In 2008 rhymesayers organized the first Soundset festival, an all day hip-hop and art festival that features exclusively independent hip-hop acts. Soundset has since grown to become the 3rd largest annual hip-hop festival.

How Rhymesayers uses social media:
Rhymesayersmake multiple daily posts on Flickr, MySpace, Facebook, Youtube, and Twitter.
They also design their web pages and apps to interconnect with each other.
How Rhymesayers use Facebook:

Primarily used as a place where rhymesayers can interact in real time with fans .
Updates on upcoming shows, releases, special events, etc.
Links to youtube videos, and other artist creations.

Rhymesayers use Facebook for everything! Again, they do an exemplary job of keeping their social media interconnection.
Forgotten about Myspace? Rhymesayers hasn’t!
Although, it pretty much mirrors their Facebook page. But at least they’re willing to go down in the trenches for those fans who still use it.
And of course, no company can really claim to be in the social media game if they aren’t using Twitter and Youtube. Just like with Myspace and Facebook, Rhymesayers use these tools primarily for artist promotion and fan interaction.
Rhymesayers partners with the digital media company SevnthSin, which provides the web and aplication content to some of Minnesota’s largest companies. e.g. The Timberwolves, Target, Harley Davidson, etc.
Check out some of the rad companies SevnthSin has worked with, yo.
Final analysis: what good is all this social media anyway?
Only the most kick-ass annual outdoor music festival in the Midwest! - Yeah muthafucka!
