4. Sacrament
Sacramentum (latim): a sign of the sacred
In those who
receive them with
the required
dispositions
(depending on the
Sacrament)
What? By Whom?
Why?
Efficacious signs
of grace.
Visible rites by
which divine life
is dispensed to
us.
Instituted by
Christ and
entrusted to
the Church.
To sanctify
men.
To build up the
Body of Christ.
To give
worship to
God.
Fruits?
7. Baptism is a
Sacrament of
Christian initiation
By which we receive the dignity of
adoption as children of God.
By which we are made Temple of the
Holy Spirit.
By which we are incorporated into the
Body of Christ, the Church.
Through which we attain the right to
receive the other Sacraments.
8. The Rite of Baptism
All Sacraments have a proper matter
and a proper form.
Matter: water
Form: “I Baptize you in the name of
the Father, and of the Son, and of the
Holy Spirit.”
Minister: Deacon (ordinarily) or, in the
absence of one, anyone.
The seal of Baptism is only given once.
Baptism cannot be repeated. No sin
can erase this mark.
10. Is Baptism
necessary for
Salvation?
“Amen, amen, I say to you, no one can enter the
kingdom of God without being born of water and
Spirit. What is born of flesh is flesh and what is born of
spirit is spirit. Do not be amazed that I told you, ‘You
must be born from above’.” John, 3:5-7
“Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the
Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe
all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with
you always, until the end of age.” Matthew, 28:19-20
So, all we have to
do is be
baptized, right?
Christ only gave
the Apostles the
authority to
baptize, right?
How can we be
born from
above? What
does that mean?
How can anyone
become a
disciple?
14. Confirmation
The Sacrament that we
receive after the baptism
wherein we receive an
abundance outpouring of the
Holy Spirit so that gives us
strength and make us more
committed Christians.
15. The Rite of
Confirmation
Matter: oil
Form: “Be sealed with the gift
of the Holy Spirit.”
Minister: Bishop (ordinarily)
or, in the absence of one,
priest.
The norm is to celebrate the
Sacrament of Confirmation
within Mass.
16.
17. (CCC 1830) The gifts of the Holy Spirit
“are permanent dispositions which make
man docile in following the promptings
of the Holy Spirit.
(Is, 11 2-3) The Spirit of the Lord will rest
on that Branch.
The Spirit will help him to be wise and
understanding.
(Wisdom, Understanding)
The Spirit will help him make wise plans
and carry them out.
(Counsel, Fortitude)
The Spirit will help him know the Lord
and have respect for him.
(Knowledge, Piety)
The Branch will take delight in respecting
the Lord.
(Fear of the Lord)
18. Diversity of Gifts of the Holy Spirit
(I Cor 12, 4-11)
There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.
There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord.
And there are diversities of activities, but it is the
same God who works all in all. But the manifestation
of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all:
for to one is given the word of wisdom through the
Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the
same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to
another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, to
another the working of miracles, to another prophecy,
to another discerning of spirits, to another different
kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of
tongue. But one and the same Spirit works all these
things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.
