  3. 3. THE FIRST 8YEARS WERE A FAILURE AFTER MULTIPLE SURGERIES. SILOED CARE AND POOR COMMUNICATION BETWEEN DOCTORS WERE A PROBLEM. RESOURCES ONLINEWERE A MESS.
  4. 4. IN MY 9THYEAR OF SEARCHING ONLINE, I STARTED WRITING OVERSEAS.
  5. 5. ONE DAY A WORLD FAMOUS FACETRANSPLANT SURGEON IN BOSTON OFFEREDTO SKYPE ME. HE HAD SEEN CASES LIKE MINE OFTEN.
  6. 6. ITOOK HIS ADVICE AND SEARCHED FOR DOCTORS IN MY AREA WHO MIMICKED IT. WITHIN 8 MONTHS MY SURGERIESWERE SUCCESSFUL. THE ACCESSTO INFORMATION MADETHE DIFFERENCE.
  7. 7. THE “E” IN E-PATIENT HAS MANY MEANINGS
  8. 8. E-PATIENTS EVOLVE ASTECHNOLOGY EVOLVES
  9. 9. AS WE MOVETOWARDS WEB 3.0 AND INDUSTRY 4.0, E-PATIENTS WILL BECOME EVEN MORE INFORMED WITH CONNECTED OBJECTS AND WEARABLES
  10. 10. IT’S IMPORTANTTO REMEMBER: E-PATIENTS ARE NOT ALL EQUAL. SOME MAY NOT WANTTO USE DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY AND STAY IN A PATERNAL ROLE WITHTHEIR PHYSICIAN. SOME MAY NEED SUPPORTTO UNDERSTAND HOWTO USETECHNOLOGY. OTHERS MAY EXPECT BETTERTECHNOLOGY FROMTHEIR PROVIDER.

  12. 12. WE HAVE STARTEDTO DEVELOPA COURSE IN SOUTH AFRICAWHICH TEACHES HCPS AND OTHER STAKEHOLDERS LIKE PATIENTS HOWTO USE THEWEB AND SOCIAL MEDIATO IMPROVE DIGITAL LITERACY FORTHE FUTURE DIGITAL HEALTH SYSTEMS
  13. 13. WE HOST A MONTHLYTWEETCHATTO GAIN INSIGHT FROM DIVERSE STAKEHOLDERS.WE BASE OURTOPICSAROUNDTHE SDG’S. WE PROMOTE COMMUNITY PARTICIPATIONAND IDEA SHARING
  14. 14. A PROMINENT ASPECT OF SOCIAL MEDIA IS HOW IT ENABLES COMMUNITY BUILDING. PATIENT COMMUNITIES ARE ESPECIALLY HELPFULTO PROVIDING PEER-TO-PEER SUPPORT
