  2. 2. Introduction  Valerie Varnuska of Westbury, NY, enjoys spending time in nature. With a keen interest in astronomy, Valerie Varnuska’s favorite outdoor activities include stargazing. Stargazing can be a humbling and almost magical experience for those who take the time to watch the night skies. If you are planning a stargazing trip, here are three tips to help you achieve stellar results: 1. Get to high ground. Especially important for city dwellers, high ground gives unobstructed views and drowns out some of the light pollution. 2. Use a red flashlight. For safety's sake, you'll need a flashlight to keep from stumbling around in the dark, but even a brief flash of white light can cause your eyes to require 20 minutes or more to readjust to the darkness. Red light does not have this effect on the eyes. 3. Travel to a dark sky site. Areas with little to no light pollution are often found far from cities. Such sites are prime locations for viewing the Milky Way. State and national parks are good places to start.
